Using a calmer for hunting?

Went hunting for the first time at the end of last season and had possibly the most exciting day of my life bar getting married - I must get out more....

Pony was fantastic - excited yes, but not silly. And I felt that as a novice rider that if I survived hunting I could do anything!

So all summer I've been looking forward to this season, however pony has decided over the last few months that everytime we do something new (show/fun rides etc) he is no longer the 15yo dobbin at home but an excitable pony that bucks and jogs all day... I'm probably exaggerating as it wouldn't be a problem for an experienced rider but a bit disconcerting for me as a novice.

So I am rather nervous about taking him hunting this season (tho' I am determined to have another go) and wondered if a calmer might help him - afterall, the hip flask helped me?

I've never tried anything like calmers before, never had the need as he usually needs a rocket up his a*se so could do with some help choosing one - if this is the right way to go??

Sorry for rambling on....

Many thanks for reading and any advice.

How about So Kalm paste , used it on pony yesterday for pony club C test (done in HUGE stubble field!!) and he was really chilled :) have tried the every day ones with no effect but this you give 1-2 hours before and it was great , when they had a practice last week he was such a twerp prancing and running off so I was very pleased with this stuff , got mine on ebay ! :)

Sounds promising! I like the idea of using a 'temporary' calmer that you just use as and when needed... or are they all like that?

I know it sounds daft but how did it work / how did it feel? Did it last all day?

Sorry for stupid questions

We had tried the powder calmers that you feed every day but diddnt have much effect although some people swear by them , a few people on here said to try So Kalm and I prefered just using it as and when we needed too , this is just like a wormer and we gave it to him a couple of hours before she was due to ride , he was definatly chilled but not doped up , my daughter said he just felt calm and controllable , doesnt say how long it lasts for but I would guess at a good few hours , I was really pleased with it ( the tube has enough for 3 doses)

Sounds really good - many thanks for the advice!!

I worry (as novice riders do) that I could do more to calm him but I am with experienced people who help me and he is still like it so I think I need a little extra help

You said it!

LOLOL! Oh please. Typical claims from the Hunting Fraternity. If you can kill an animal and get away with it, you are invincible. How sad.

I have just been autumn hunting, my new horse's first outing and used So Kalm paste! I've used it before and rate it for an effective short-term solution for over-excitable horses. I gave it 2 hours before and didn't get the bucking I had expected. He did start winding up after about 2 hours but that could be just him! He could still gallop and jump, quite important as you don't want them so dopey that they misjudge a fence! Hope this helps.

That was very helpful thank you!

Thanks - I was worried that he might be too dopey if I did decide to jump. Did you give it to him 2 hours before like they recommend?

Hoping to go cubbing on Saturday and Monday (opening meet Sat 10th) so we wont be out for hours anyway and should be pretty quiet.

Fingers crossed for a lovely time :)

hiya i havent been hunting before but have used short term calmers while competing and presume its much the same, you need to take the edge off without being too dopey!

equine america so kalm paste is very good, or there is temperelax which you put in the feed the night before and on the morning off the hunt. or the only one that ive found works for one of my horses is supreme products defuse. you need to get the timing right tho as most of them take a couple of hours to kick in!

good luck and enjoy your day :)
