Been trying George in a few bits as an alternative to his dutch gag as he seems to be increasingly unhappy with it (back, teeth etc all ok). Have been quite pleased with the slotted low port kimblewick we've borrowed to try with the reins on the top slot. I am using it with an elastic curb chain that is as loose as it can be, but not that loose as George has a big chin

to be honest I'm not sure he needs the curb chain, so i was wondering if you could use the kimblewick without the curb, or will that completely alter how the bit works? Does anyone use it like this and how do you get on?

Thanks

If you do not need the action of the curb, then it is fine not to have one. The fact that you have it very loose indicates that you may not need it.

Yes you can, but it doesn't make it any less severe, juts different, as it then acts like a gag. Our slotted kinblewicks on top slot work just as a snaffle however, so removing the curb chain would make no difference, but your slot may be in a slightly differnt place.

The hooks will need removing otherwise they will flap against the bit which your horse will feel in his mouth.

I have a suspicion that it is the jointed mouthpiece and/or loose rings of the gag that is causing his annoyance (may be wrong), as he goes very well in a myler mullen mouth hanging cheek for flatwork and dressage, but I was just looking for something with a little more braking power for jumping and xc.
