Using a saddle that is too long?

For long reining? I have a saddle that fits my youngster width wise but is 18" so too long for him. Would you use it purely for long reining so he gets used to stirrups hanging down? I have the saddler coming in August and won't be riding him until I know I have a saddle that fits. Thoughts please :)

I personally wouldn't, I long rein with a roller and run the lines through the rings. Tbh I only long rein with stirrups for a couple of days, never had a problem with a young horse being spooked by stirrups, also I don't think it's safe to long rein with stirrups regularly.

I long rein with stirrups hanging to teach the leg cues for lateral work.

As there is no pressure being put on from above I don't think there would be any problems.

Thanks guys, I have spoken to my saddler who said it would be fine to long rein him in (and she knows how careful I am about there backs) All answers were very much appreciated :D
