Have a horse with a fluid swelling from a muscle tear, vet has scanned suggested physio who has been this morning and suggested claying it - Ive never done this before = is it literally a case of mixing it and slapping it on?!

Thanks folks :)

Yep, it will dry overnight and then you cold hose it off. If lower limbs you might do what the racehorses do, clay up, cover with brown paper [feed bag] and bandage. But that was really to draw bruising and the bandages were sometimes removed when they got home.

I haven't used clay for years! Mum used to put it on our point to pointer after racing and hunting. From memory the ice clay comes ready to go in a big tub, I think you can just put it on, or you can put bandages on. Once its dry scrap most of it off and hose the rest.

Like I say this is from memory as a teenager many moons ago.

Good luck, I hope it works for you and your horse.

I seem to remember years ago being told about putting kaolin on bumps and knocks - is that similar stuff? We used to be told about a kaolin poultice, but never actually saw one.

Similar, they put some additives in the natural clay and brand it with a nice name.
If you were born in the 1940's you would have had kaolin poultices for various childhood illnesses

Humph, I'm not that old Bonkers2! :D:D

But seriously, thanks for the info. I'd forgotten all about kaolin until I saw this thread.

Yes, we thought bleeding and leeches were very extreme [leeches have made a comeback], but everyone had a thermometer and lint in the first aid kit. I once had a mustard poultice [a thin layer of mustard paste on the lint to reduce fever.
I don't remember having a kaoline poultice myself, but it came in a tin and was heated up in a saucepan of water, I think it was my bro got that.

My mother talks about having goose fat put on her chest, covered with brown paper, when she had bronchitis as a child.

I've still got some!!!!!
First compounded in 1891, in Greensboro. It was introduced in 1905 with the name Vick's Magic Croup Salve and rebranded as VapoRub in 1912. Vicks VapoRub contains four active ingredients: Camphor, Turpentine oil, Levomenthol and Eucalyptus oil.

I can t find a photo of the original jar, which has been redesigned by the marketing department

I just clay legs and don't cover, the hosing required to get rid of the clay is probably more beneficial than the clay anyway :p

We used to do the whole clay, wet brown paper (from feed bags) then bandage on top after eventing.. Stopped doing it as use different stuff now! We also have kaolin for poulticing on the yard, it's very effective :)

It comes in tubs or even tubes, ready made. I just bought some with arnica in too. It's very common over here to use it for swellings. Just smooth on generously, leave to dry (it's the drying that does the best good). Then hose off. I always have some in the medical kit!

I used to buy kaolin powder from Boots years ago and made my own face masks by mixing it with rose water:) It's good stuff.
