Using oil for slow release energy ....

I use bog standard vegetable oil for coats and general maintenance, just a good glug in the evening. I know that many feeds now come with oil included which is probably the best way of feeding it for slow release because I think you only need a fairly small amount. My only experience of other oils has resulted in totally mad pony because they weren't working hard enough to need it! What do you do with yours?

oil will add condition if you are not working horse hard enough... any calories will...
i use a plunger (the type that come with many oil bottles) a day of D&H soya oil
for slow release energy i've found allan & page power and perfornace fabulous

I use soya or corn oil in conjunction with sugar beet for slow energy release (plus soaked oats) I feed about 100ml a day over two feeds (a good glug is about right!) Some horses cannot tolerate too much oil in their diets and some vegetable oils are pro inflammatory so not good for joints. I was told the best oil to feed is linseed as it contains the correct omegas for joints and all the calories for energy.

Thx folks.

16.1 warmblood, dressage our main aim. Worked (mixing schooling with hacks) every day. I feed straights as I find it easier to adapt to workload and control weight. Alpha A Lite and Naked Oats. Oats give us the instant energy level required but wondering if I add oil I can sustain the energy level over a longer period.

Might like to cut work through December. Contemplating cutting oats and feeding oil to maintain enough energy to hack three/four days week. He's an idle soul and don't want him to get the notion he can drop behind my leg, even though we're relaxing.

I learn so much from others here. Thanks again.

PS I have researched the appropriate vits required to feed alongside oats and he gets these. In addition he gets glaucosomine (sp?) as he's an older chap. The linseed oil sounds a better option for him in this respect.

Linseed is also a good anti-imflammtory so I'm told so good for oldies and all round really
