The field my mare and her field mate are in is just over an acre and clay soil. It's got a bit churned up over winter so while we are resting it we'd like to flatten it out (once it stops raining for long enough).

I was thinking of making a 'sort of harrow' with a pallet weighed down by tyres, and had a romantic idea of getting my fjord to pull it, thus giving her some exercise and helping the field at the same time. Trouble is, I've no idea what equipment I'd need for her. She long lines, but has never actually dragged anything, so I know I need to start off slowly. I'd make sure someone was leading her and someone walking behind as well, just to be safe.

Would she need a full harness? Where would I start?

ETA, she's not spooky so would likely take to dragging something quite easily, especially in the field she's familiar with and with someone at her head.

Well today I was long reining my youngster with lightish chains attached to the traces of the harness which is usually the first thing I drag because they get used to things behind them making a noise and touching their legs but it's easier to sort out a problem than with a swingle tree on as they are separate so harder to get tangled in. All was good so I have a set of more substantial chains I use and long lining round the school/ field in those starts to act on the surface like a two pronged harrow.

You'd need the collar or breastcollar, saddle and traces from a harness but no need for breeching. Chains attached to a spacer bar with carabiners to hook onto your "harrow". I'd start off with just a tyre and then move up.

Then next winter you can also go pony sledging, which is just about the most fun you can have with a horse imo.

I like that idea. Whenever I'm pushing muck filled wheelbarrows about I always get the feeling they should be assisting ;) Particularly when they stand there looking at me! They all pulled something before they became 'sport horses'
