I asked my vet about using regumate ealier in the year, but she told me to try a calmer firstt and that reguamte was the last treatment rather than the first (and it's expensive). We used a calmer and didn't need it in the end. Hope you get sorted.
. It worked wonders on my mare. TBH, she was never aggressive, but my goodness she was a pain at competitions, to the point of being dangerous. She's was so easy when on it, not calling to anything that resembled a horse. I have since used the marble and at first didn't think it worked, but I took her off Regumate a while ago and she hasn't come into season (she did all year round).
I never noticed any side affects from the Regumate, but it does require careful handling especially by women. It is also VERy expensive. Any other questions just ask
If you do put your mare on it, make sure you always handle it with gloves as it can do weird things to your own cycle
I haven't used it myself but know a lot of people who couldn't ride their mares in summer without it. As others have said, it is a kind of a last resort treatment.
I have used the marble with great success for Kizzy, it has quite honestly transformed my life, no side effects, cheaper than Regumate by miles & also no worries about handling a strong hormone myself. The vet is due to come & take it out, he advises that we remove it over the winter otherwise there is a chance that it won't be as effective next year.
I too have used marbles to great effect on my daughters pony and would recommend them. Much cheaper than regumate about £60-70 for insertion, and you don't have the hassle of having to adminster a hormone - need to be careful with regumate because it can affect your own monthly cycle, also not filling horse full of hormones.
OMG never realised that it needed carefull handling- I was working at a yard a short while ago and they never ever said anything about it needing to be handled carefully
Anyway, have heard that it was the only thing that kept the event horse Miss De Meena sane enough to compete ...
My mare is on Regumate because she gets painful ovaries and can't canter when in season. It's worked brilliantly- she's still her 'quirky' self, by no means a dobbin, but she's no longer unpredictable far more relaxed through her back when I ride.
yeah,it definitely works, turned one of our school mares from a monster into a saint! But as already said above,it is very expensive and does require careful handling- getting it on your skin etc can affect your own cycle!!
Ok, so trying other things first sounds good. I have a mare who is cycling even now, doesn't call or become aggressive but is hopeless when in season. She can barely move for squirting, won't pick feet up or step over because she is wetting everywhere. Never had one like this before, that still comes into season this deep into the winter.
Which supplement or additive would you suggest, or would the marbles option be a better one? Please bear in mind she's a TB and in training..... although there's no way she'll manage to race if she comes into season over a race day!
