Using sedalin - some questions

Hi,

I'm having my horse clipped tomorrow and have been given sedalin gel by the vet as his previous owner said he needed it.

The lady who is clipping has clipped him before and says he was fine after having the sedalin, so I'm pretty sure it will work.

Sorry if they are stupid questions, but I've never used it before! Can I give it in a small feed or on a carrot/apple? He hates syringes when worming and he does tend to scoff any food presented to him so am thinking it may be easier and less stressful for him this way?

How long before he is clipped should I give him the sedalin? Should I give it when he is in the barn where the clipping will be done, or give it in his stable and lead round?

Should he have a haynet available when being clipped, or will this just make him 'wake up'?

How long does it take to wear off? E.g. will he be ok to be turned out afterwards, or will he need to be kept in stable?

Thanks!

I use sedalin as you would a wormer orally, but I think putting it in food might be a worry, as you are relaxing muscles - choke ? . It tastes nice, so will he lick it off your hand ? If not, go for a tiny bit of sugarbeet or chaff.

It takes about 30 mins to take effect on the right dose, check the eye response to be sure. Do not feed anything at all while under sedation, just do what you have to do, and then leave the horse to recover in a stable.

get the right dose from the vet first, btw ;) Be aware that some horses react much more stronly to sedation than others. I only use it very rarely, and prefer to twitch in the first instance - have you tried this ?

I am afraid sedalin can be a bit hit and miss, and works better on some horses than others.

When I have used it I have mixed it in with a small feed, and try to adminster around 45 mins before the 'stressful' period. It is also important to give it when the horse is nice and settled - if they are already wound up it doesn't work in my experience.

Sedalin does not work like iv sedation, and really only just takes the edge off, so be aware the horse may still create.

I avoid giving them hay etc straight after adminstering but they don't seem to need the same 'coming around' period that they do after iv sedation, and if the horse appears 'normal' would turn out after approx 1/2 an hour.

Also to note that increasing the doseage does not increase the depth of sedation, but may prolong the effect.

Good luck and hope it works for you ok - the horse we used it on it would help 50% of the time, so no guarantees!

I've found it it has more of an effect if you give it on an empty(ish) stomach so I'd take his hay away an hour or two before. It doesn't send my horse under very deeply but it lasts hours on him - he had half the dose he should have had and was zonked all day!
Unless the old owner has told you exactly how much he needs, I'd give him half-two thirds of the dose appropriate to his size to begin with and top him up if he doesn't seem to have responded. You need to do this before you start clipping though as otherwise adrenaline takes over! Good luck.

I've used it on the grey and the gelding.

It worked beautifully on the grey (she was on box rest at the time) and I would give her the sedalin first thing in the morning, go and have my breakfast and then go back to the stables. She would then be quiet enough to treat her wound and take her out to graze in-hand.

With the gelding it had no effect at all (even with a large dose for his size - approved by the Vet). He is much hotter than the grey and even though I waited until he was calm before I gave it to him, he was just as perky as normal after 1/2 hour and then prancing about 'oooh look at meeeeee!' after an hour. So intravenous sedation it was. ;)

you need to give it before any reaction has started, so when she is relaxed and quiet, between 1/2 and 1 hour prior to clipping. How many ml did the vet say to give. Giving more won't increase the amount of sedation just increase the time.

We have used it on a coloured mare we have. She used to get it before farrier, and initially took quite a lot to settle, adn we have it to her an hour before the farreir came. She was turned out about na hour nad a half after the deed was done. She has needed less and less as she has gotten used to being trimmed. She was done hte last time without it at all. (She was beat and abused and had a problem with men. She's fine with women but is coming round now. Couldn't find a lady farrier!)

I used to put it in feed... But once my dog ate the feed and got very heavily sedated... Panic call to the vet as I thought I had killed the dog and my parents were away (I was about 14!), dog is still alive though, did her no harm :)

Give it about an hour before you need it, and make sure the horse is in a stress free environment.

Giving it via feed is fine, I've also sandwiched it between ginger biscuits in an emergency.

Tried to sedalin my horse 6 years ago to clip as he was terrified. It was heartbreaking as he was almost on his knees by the time we had topped up and topped up (i was with someone who had done this many times) but as soon as the clippers went on, every time, his eyes were frantic & he would fight it.

Please do some desensitisation before doing this & dont be despondent if u dont succeed. We tried for 5 hours.

Thankfully we clip with no sedative now but I always do a couple of days desensitising before each clip.

Hope it goes ok.
