Has anyone successfully used a supplement as an indicator that horse needs scoping? Ie have you used a supplement for ulcers where horse shown improvements and then ulcers confirmed by scope? If so what did you use? Horse showing possible signs of ulcers but very very subtle!

Yes. my horse was rideable but not right. on recommendation I put her on thunderbrooks base mix, liquid gold and ulsagon, and she improved overnight. Scoping confirmed low grade ulcers. two years ago it was about £120 for the "kit" from thunderbrooks. Expensive, but effective.

I had one I was convinced had ulcers, girthy, a bit grumpy, never ate up and weight could drop off overnight, after a minor colic we decided to scope but while waiting I made a few changes to diet and supplements, scope showed no active ulcers but some areas of scarring so I guess management was keeping them at bay and his behaviour was more remembered pain from a previous time with them, he had been on loan for some time prior to coming here and had been kept very underweight/ hungry, he was so much better once I got the diet right.

What changes did you make if you don’t mind me asking? My horse has purabeet Timothy chop salt and high spec vit min supplement plus extra magnesium and joint supplement. Lots of hay and i turnout as much as possible. She’s always been difficult to ride and spooky but I’d say more unpredictable lately - donkey one day and spooky anxious horse the next - has been grumpy with rug changes this winter and sometimes a bit with girth but not consistently so. Sometimes chews rug rail when tied up longer than she’d like. Weight fine and coat gleaming. Vet reluctant to scope and I’m not sure!

Yes i was actually advised by my vet to trial a 14 days ulcer treatment rather than scoping as my horse had previously not coped get with sedation. He explained that it is quite common to do it this way. My horse was noticeable different within 4-5 days
