I'm interested in trying wood pellets for a couple of my horses who like to pee a lot!! I'm currently using shavings but they are not fantastically absorbant. As my beds are on concrete I have the shavings pretty deep so don't really want to throw them all away to start a fresh bed! Would the wood pellets work if I laid them on the floor underneath my shavings beds?

I use wood pellets under shavings for my horses with wet beds and it works really well. I just spread a couple of bags of wood pellets in the area where they wee most and then cover with shavings. I like it as it means you can still have really good banks. Each week, I scrape off the shavings, take out the wet and replace the wood pellets. I find I don't use a bale of shavings as well every week as you end up with too much bed. Taking the wet out is more of a hassle with the mare as it tends to be round the edge and under the banks, but with the geldings its a doddle!

I do this but deep litter. I scrape the top layer of wet off every week and top up pellets once a month. I only end up using one bag of pellets and one bale of shavings a month so my very wet boy only costs me £16 a month in bedding :)

We use pellets under softbed. Only take poo out during the week and lift and remove wee at weekend. Bed stays dry on top but takes a good 30 mins to remove all the wee at weekends and prob 3 wheelbarrows but wee stays contained and dont need as much bedding

I've been looking for some local suppliers of bedding and have found one that sells something called dri-mat which is supposed to be more absorbant than pellets - am now wondering whether to try this instead?!!
