My horse has a condition were the sunlight basically can't come in contact with his legs. He was in bandages before but I found my horses legs got too hot in these. I bought him some uv sun boots around 3 weeks ago and he wears them around 12 hours to 16 hours per day. I have noticed that the boots are starting to rub his legs mainly the fur has been rubbed away and is leaving sore skin behind. His legs still need protecting. At first I was thinking of creams which I can use on his fores as there not too bad but it's hinds are worse I was thinking of sewing some padding of some sort onto the boots. What would you all do?

I would try keratex powder which is used for mud fever, it is moisture repellent.
There are tubigrips which might help, but will not be cooling, though cooler than bandages.

The keratex will help heal the rubs too and make the skin slippy so the boots are less likely to rub. Failing that I think the OP will have to consider only turning out at night and on cloudy days.

Which boots are you using? There may be another brand which works better? Or how about sewing some fleece / wool or taping gamgee around the rubby bits?
Sudocrem is a great sunblock, and also useful on sore skin, so it might help?

I have been using sudocreme. The boots I am using are Cashel boots. I am thinking of sewing some wool on them, its just what it they get wet..
Tallyho, its not as easy as bringing him in. He gets really upset stabled when he is the only one in plus his legs swell .

Would a total sun block work? It keeps our very pink-nosed cob from getting crispy with only one application a day. You'd need to do it at least a couple of times for a really sensitive horse, just in case any has rubbed off. Wouldn't be cheap to do four legs everyday, but if it worked, you could give him a break from the boots every so often

Dude.... just bring em in out the sun!

this

heating up the legs for prolonged periods of time with boots and bandages is so risky as it compromises the tendons and ligaments as well as weakens the skins defences.
if you can't have company in with him then he would have to deal with it or move yards-legs swelling is less of a risk than the above and may be controlled by diet

I wouldn't put any creams or powders on unless you know your horse won't have an adverse reaction. My gelding has a reaction to Sudocreme for instance.
I have the same problem with a gelding who has LV. The only solution is to bring the horse in during the day, I think if they don't tolerate the sun well they should be in anyway.
Get a different brand of boot and try alternating them so the rubs have a chance to heal. Then take them off during the day when the horse is in.

I think I would try sewing in silk. Nice and slippy and we all know what wonderful thermal qualities it has.

All horses get a bit upset on thier own but they get used to it... just think about it as if he was on boxrest.

As for legs swelling, this is a typical symptom of sluggish circulation so you maybe ought to think about investigating further... kidneys, liver? Type of feed? A big detox is needed imho here and I think you will find it will improve.

Thanks to all the suggestions. I am normally down early in the morning so I generally take his boots of late at night and there back on in the day. My horses liver has been checked and it's fine. My horse has spent alot of time on box rest! Due his condition or more the side effects of the meds he is on he is sectioned off within the field and it's hard enough getting him in there. Even when my horse is on box rest he was still screams the place down and box walks.

I would try a different brand- pro choice do fleece lined ones? Roma/amigo do soft rimmed ones.

Or get busy with your needle and thread with some silk or similar.

Well, I was only trying to help.

I have two sets of the Whinney socks that I tried with my horse. They are good but were difficult to get on over my boy's rather large feet. I would be happy to sell them on! Equilibrium don't make their boots anymore but you can sometimes get them second hand. I use them constantly in the summer on my boy and they have never rubbed. I think the Cashel ones are a bit rougher - I use them intermittently and they don't seem to rub either but might if he wore them every day.
