I made the decision to move my veteran TB mare off pasture this week. She was not thriving and did not seem to be putting on some much-needed weight. The pasture is 60 acres and is shared by a mixed herd of 14, mainly geldings. She has always been a bit of a loner and now seems quite content in her large pen with another horse on either side. Her general attitude seems a bit calmer and she is easier to handle for tricky jobs like eye drops, which leads me to my main point: can uveitis be affected by stress? She was diagnosed this past winter and has had more or less continuous flare-ups which I manage with a mask, prescription drops and bute. For the last few days though the eye seems a lot better and she has been without her mask with no problems. I feel the stress of a large herd (in which she had no particular buddy) is a factor in her lack of weight gain, but could it have made the uveitis worse also?
