Hi

Looking for gems of help to manage equine uveitis? One of our horses has been diagnosed this week - we are seeing vet again tomorrow for ways forward after box rest but I know this forum usually turns up help and advice from others that have experience.
We reckon we will need to use a UV mask every day now but what other implications are there in terms of hacking, competing, re-sale value etc

I guess our main goal is to be able to manage flare ups and hopefully reduce to the least number of these over a year.

Currently we think the trigger has been the continuous cold wind & snow :(
Anybody else been able to pinpoint the trigger for their own ?

many thanks in advance

I must have been writing my post at the same time as you!

We thought the trigger for my boy was the sunlight so he always wears a normal fly mask when it is a bright day, I take it off for hacking and competing and he has been fine.

I didn't box rest my boy at any point just bute to ease the pain if there was any and in the summer he came in during the day as it was bright but this is what we do normally over the summer. We are considering putting a blinker like patch into the fly mask if the problem continues this summer even with the implant.

Good luck with your horse.

You can get coloured contact lenses for horses that act as sunglasses. My lad had one of these in for a while due to a different eye problem and yes it did look a bit freaky but it worked.

I have gone through this twice .

my experience

  • Look for the starting sign, (my mare was shaking her head) That i knew was the time to put the atropine in to reduce inflammation and dilate the pupil.
  • use a guardian mask in field and cashel in stable to protect from lights and dust
  • keep a diary of sun - wind - snow etc to help you find cause

  • a ride on guardian mask to protect when riding
  • i used brewers yeast
some more help here >http://horse-care-and-advice.weebly.com/u.html

The main thing is learn the warning signs - the quicker you get the atropine in the more sight you save.

With mine it was wind even a breeze would trigger it, I hope you have better luck with yours it's one of the worse equine experiances I have had , however a friend had a mare who lead a totally normal long life with no special care at all.

I have just replied to other post Karen Nicholls [ uveitis story so far ] if you can read also , Shergar .

Thanks for everyone's help so far
Need to find 90% UV mask
But will look at the lenses!
Some great tips thankyou!x

Despite the most careful management, some uveitis cases still end up with the eye having to be removed. It can aso begin in the other eye. Because of this I'm afraid you'll find that re-sale value is almost zero.
