Uveitus Operation - Any Info?

I presume you are talking about the ciclosporin implant?

If you search my posts there is one replied to about uveitus and a member was just about to have an implant done on her horse.

We did exchange PM's but have not had an update as to how she/he got on.

Will have a quick look to see if I have the pm's still.

If you are on about the levage tube mine had that and it worked brilliantly

Hi Folks,

Whiskey finally managed to make me look at my pm's - I'm a bit oblivious as I never expect any messages!

Just to update all, the cyclosporin implant op went very well, no probs before or after surgery. The vets were great and made sure lots of care was taken before and after in terms of infection prevention/control.

It was done back in April, and he hasn't had a flare up since. He had one episode where a blood vessel burst in his eye and the on call (inexperienced) vet said it was a uveitis flare up, but it wasn't and the blood from the rupture cleared away within the week.

He is now pretty sightless in the eye - unfortunately he had a number of flare ups that were not evident after Xmas and in the New Year and they seemed to silently degrade his vision, but the main thing is that the body of the eye is healthy, he does seem to have some light/dark perception and hopefully, as the flare ups seem to have stopped, the other eye is protected.

We have even stopped putting his guardian mask on; he was rolling in it a lot and perhaps putting his eye in more danger from it rubbing, so we took it off a couple of months ago and he has been ok.

I could not recommend the op enough, if your vet thinks your horse is a suitable candidate. If nothing else, it stops that horrible sinking feeling when you realise another flare up is occuring and you are in for a few weeks of catheter levage and more vet bills.

Interestingly, I was out in Texas this summer and stayed at a ranch where one of the horses had uveitis - I was amazed at the state of her eye - it had ulcerated and was being treated by a very good and knowlegable owner with vet back up, but it looked rough, far worse than Quif's ever did. The horse was still in work and seemed happy enough. I asked if they had heard of the op, but the owner said their vet didn't think she was a candidate, which seemed a shame.

Thanks so much for the update! I am awaiting a yes or no from Newmarket as this is only his second attack - but his sight is still ok so i really really want to preserve that, am seriously hoping we get the go ahead, especially as you have had such a positive outcome to your surgery. will keep you posted as to whether is yay or nay.

I'm glad it's worked for your horse, I battled with my boy for 4 years he was having flare ups every 6 weeks. Sadly he was misdiagnosed for years but thanks to google l aired on the side of caution and treated it as Uevitis, which almost certainly saved his sight. Sadly I lost him the beginning of this year through something unrelated. It's a horrible thing to suffer and if not treated immediately is a very painful condition. Good luck to you both x
