I'm looking for a new riding hat to replace my ancient champion skull cap. Seen the Uvex Exxential and quite like it as it looks nice and sporty whilst being not too pricey. I have a gatehouse chelsea for competing (dressage) so this is for everyday. I would like something I can do a little bit of mini xc in as well and was wondering if anyone knew if the peak comes off the Uvex so it can be used xc?

Thanks.

I have this hat. However whilst it's a lovely hat especially in the warmer weather I'm sure the peak doesn't come off but I'll check it tomorrow. I usually put on my Charles Owen for XC which feels more substantial and of course no peak.

I’d echo this. I’ve got one and it’s a great hat, especially in summer. But I wouldn’t be too inclined to want to wear it xc

It only meets the VG01 standard which is the temporary replacement for the EN1384. You might have difficulty competing in it. Although some disciplines do accept this standard it won't meet the 2018 Pony Club or BE provisions. On that basis I would suggest it probably isn't the best hat for XC. And you might find that if the EU ever sort out the EN1384(2017) standard - which will be 2018 by then of course - that this will no longer be accepted. Personally - you only have one head. Wear the highest standard of protective gear you can!

Thanks for the heads up. To be honest the website I was looking on described it as the highest protection and suitable for BE/BD/BS/RC/PC which seems a bit misleading if what you're saying is the case. Genuinely wasn't trying to scrimp or save, I quite like the style and I get a stupidly sweaty head and hat hair which I was trying to minimise!!

I find the Uvexx website pretty misleading. It's extremely difficult to find what standards it actually meets.

However, they are amazingly comfortable, and I came out of a fall where I landed on my head on a solid surface with only a minor concussion, so I'm definitely planning on getting another for everyday use. I wouldn't use it for cross-country, though, even if it had a detachable peak (which it doesn't).

The uvex website - which I tried first - doesn't list the PPE standard. Probably deliberately because use of these hats is very limited in Europe. I actually found the standard listed on Amazon. VG01 is absolutely not the highest protection available - it is the lowest possible standard. If you want to look at what is actually involved in hat testing you can do so here http://www.beta-uk.org/media/safety/download/Riders - safety - hat standards.pdf This doesn't actually list the VG01 standard as this was intended to only be in use for a few months - but it is said by the EU to be a similar standard to the old and now discontinued EN1384.

If you want a top standard hat look for SNELL 2001 or 2006. Formerly these were only found in Gatehouse hats - which was great if you had a gatehouse shaped head but not everyone does. This summer Charles Owen released the 4 star which fills most of the "other shaped head" market. But there are still folk for whom neither fit still.

Sorry - hat geek. But it keeps your brains where they are supposed to be!
