Looking for some opinions please on this subject, I have yet to speak to my vet, the manufacturers state it is safe to booster during pregnancy but somehow it doesnt sit right with me. I know there are differing opinions, would be interested to know what others thought. In addition, would anybody not have ANY dogs in the household vaccinated with a pregnant bitch in the house?

Like you I would not be comfortable doing this, however I would be guided by your vet.
On a similar topic, I spoke to my vet about the panacur worming system for in whelp bitches, basically worming every day from day 40 until I think it is 2 days after whelping. Evie was wormed a month before mating and I just didn't like the sound of this and asked my very experienced vet his opinion. His thoughts were that as long as the bitch had a decent worming regime prior to mating, this was a very expensive course and in his opinion not worth doing. He said that the worst worm burden he had seen in pups at 2 weeks was in a litter whose dam had been wormed with Panacur.

As nobody has yet demonstrated to me, clearly, the efficacy of booster jabs, and as you aren't happy with the idea, then the answer's simple, don't do it!! ;)

Alec.

I used the panacur system once MM...never ever ever again, I've never had worms like it in pups and do you think panacur would get rid of them either? Nope! Awful experience and fell back on good old drontal to clear it as soon as they were 2 weeks. I'm unsure as to what I'm going to do with madam as never had problems with worms in pups using drontal before whelp but she doesnt tolerate drontal, honks it back up every time

....... for in whelp bitches, basically worming every day from day 40 until I think it is 2 days after whelping. .......

Did I read that correctly? Worming every day, for some 25 days? If you actually meant that this was the advice which you'd been given, is it any wonder that gut parasites build up an immunity to certain wormers?

Over worming carries the same risk as not bothering.

Alec.

Yep Alec, as Vizslak says that is what currently seems to be recommended for worming in whelp bitches, just google it. According to my vet Panacur is one of the worst wormers for resistance, is it any wonder! I am going to stick with my tried and tested system of drontal at 2 weeks and then every 2 weeks.
Does this mean you're pretty sure she is in whelp Viz :)

ssssh we havnt scanned yet, next week, but shes erm...being as only a drama queen in whelp could be ie. unlike any other bitch I have owned before  yep, morning sickness the lot (though *touches wood* it seems to have passed now) I'm quietly confident she is but wait for the definate news next week!

I don't vaccinate a pregnant bitch or one due to be mated.

The last thing you want is a high antibody count in a lactating bitch as the passed on maternal immunity can conflict with the puppy vaccinations leaving the puppies at risk unless you wait an extra month or two which means missing out on socialisation.

Would the naturally occurring IgG levels be affected by vaccinations?

However wrong others may think that I am, during the relatively short duration of gestation, for a dog, I do nothing which is outside their normal daily routine, absolutely nothing.

Never run away with the idea that the drugs companies have either yours, or your dog's, best interest at heart. Viewing some of the complete feeds which some vets foist on to their clients, I'm tempted to include some veterinary practices in with the drugs manufacturers, too.

Alec.

I tend to agree with you there Alec re bitches routine. Evie is still having her normal exercise although she is slightly less keen to run with her ball. I have stopped the heeler pup ragging on her tail as she was obviously getting fed up with it, and have today started given her an extra small meal at midday (she is 6.5 weeks) but nothing else has changed.
I know I am lucky with my vets, they have never tried to push food onto me, and as i have already said my vet has advised me against the panacur. There is no doubt the food companies try to get their product name across to vet students (you should see the freebies my daughter was given:D) but hopefully the majority will not be influenced.

I'm of that school of thought too Alec, however in this instance doing nothing different would include my bitch and two other bitches in the house having their annual boosters which they are due in March, something which I dont think I'm prepared to do. I'm not talking of vaccinating because of pregnancy, just the boosters have coincided at the wrong time.
