Evening everyone, I was just hoping you could give me a bit of advice regarding vaccinations... I've messed up the dates and am not too sure what I should be doing to correct things - apologies in advance for sounding so completely dim! :(

On 3/06/11 she was vaccinated for flu & tetanus, and then on the 28/05/12 she was vaccinated for flu... all good so far.

However! - some time last year I had a total blonde moment and wrote down that she was due her next flu/tet vaccination before 3rd June. Obviously it should have been the 28th May, but the vet came out yesterday (31st May) to give her the flu and tet - and I only realised that I'd got the date wrong once the vet had gone down the drive & I glanced in the passport (that'll teach me to check more often)

So - obviously she's gone over her 365 day deadline by 3 days.

Now I'm panicking! For general health reasons am I correct in thinking that she is still protected against both, it's just for competitions etc it needs to be done within a year of the last vaccination?

I doubt we'll be going to any competitions this year (she's been off for a while due to injury & pony party season will be over when she's fit again), but I hope to do so next year... so am I right in thinking that she would need to re-start the process? (EG: 1st vaccination, 2nd one about 4 weeks later, then booster every year?)

If so..
As she had her flu/tet yesterday, has this ruled out competitions for the next year?
Or - is the booster vaccine given the same vaccine as the primary/secondary dose? - so I could phone the vet and ask her to come back to do a second vaccination?

I hope that made sense, I'd be hugely grateful for any advice! Hot chocolates & victoria sponge on offer x

That's such a b*gger that you missed the date!

From a health point of view she's fine and will be covered :)! If you compete affiliated or RC then you'll need to restart, and yes, you recent vaccine old be the first of your primary course, so you'll need the vet again in few wks, then I think there is another in 6 months then annual booster after that?

If you compete unaffiliated and passports aren't checked, then you should be ok?

Edited to add.......if competing under rules, then you can compete 7 days (I think) after second vaccine has been given?

Thank you so much for your reply, you've put my mind at ease!

I know - so annoying! I wish I'd checked the passport instead of trusting my phone. We're only doing unaffiliated at the moment but hoping to do some RC next year, so I'd better book a second visit from the vet... poor horse won't thank me as she's had quite a nasty reaction to this one (very puffy chest!) :(
Thanks again x

Yeah, if you want to do RC you'll def need to restart, they're really strict.

Speak to your vet re the reaction to the vaccine, and maybe leave it as long as poss before next jab, theres a window of days you need to do it by. My chap has some bute before and after his jabs as he gets some interesting swellings ;)!

Thank you everyone - ours don't send reminders unfortunately - wish they did!!

The big swelling on her chest hasn't gone down yet, I thought it was getting smaller yesterday (hence not calling the vet back out) but it's still very much there this morning and very sensitive to the touch. I'm usually on the phone at the first sight of anything not quite right, but I don't really want to disturb my poor overworked vet on a Sunday when it's not an emergency. I have a lifetime supply of bute in the cupboard from my late gelding, would it be worth giving her some of this today to see if it brings the swelling down? If so - how much do you think I should go for? I've never given her bute before, she's a 16hh TB type weightaping in at 475kg - would 1/2 a sachet now & before "bed" be enough to be effective? (I will of course ring the vet first thing tomorrow if there's no change) x
