My horse who was fit and healthy had his annual vaccinations two weeks ago. He then showed signs of lethargy, runny nose and just a bit dull with submandibular gland swollen. This continued for 12 days. He now has a swollen lymph gland and has undergone swab tests for strangles! The first test has come back clear, he doesnt have the virus. Im totally confused as he was healthy and in work prior to his vaccinations. Anybody else had any problems?

My horse had a reaction to her jabs last year, she had an increased temperature and was sweaty, lethargic etc. She also came up in a huge lump in the area the needle had gone in which continued to swell for days after the injection and her neck was so stiff she could hardly move it.

My vet advised the vaccination company as apparantly they change the strains of whatever is in in their vaccinations to prevent immunity to them, and they need to know if there has been a large percentage of reactions to any particular batch. My vet hadn't had a horse with a reaction for years and he had 3 reactions around the time of mine.

It took about a week for her to start to feel better so less time than your boy. She didn't really have a runny nose at any point and apart from the fact it hurt her neck to lower it to eat she wasn't off her food. I started riding her after a week and I'd say it took a further week for her to ride normally.

My vet did warn me that after having a reaction they are much more likely to react again so I need to remind them every time they come to do her jabs. They are due 1st November so I'm a bit concerned it could happen again.

I hope yours recovers soon, it's such a worry isn't it.

Yep aside from that, its made mine itch, go foot sore, lose hair. you name it!!!:o

My advice is a course of restore by global herbs - I now feed restore and immuplus leading up to jabs to support her when she has them and that seems to limit the effects - usually feed two weeks before and week after :)

Thanks all, he has been swabbed clear of strangles so must be down to the vaccination. Three weeks ago now since he had it done, never reacted before but seems to be resolving itself slowly now. I will definitely be very aware of this for next year!

My mare always used to react - she'd look like poop for about a week. A bit like we would look if we'd had a 'flu vaccination. She always got stiff, too - if she had it in her neck, she couldn't eat off the floor for days. This year she had it in her chest, blew up like a balloon, and went lame!

It's not unusual, as the others have said. Just be prepared next year, give him a week off.

My mare had a reaction first time this year to a reaction
But nothing major just a swollen neck and very painful I couldn't ride for over a week

My mare had a bad reaction once - her neck got so stiff that she couldn't get her head down at all - but that was about 12 years ago and she has never had a reaction since. For many years after it happened, I had the vet inject her bum rather than her neck though, so at least if she did react she would be able to graze!
