Vaccination reaction?

My little dog had his vaccinations this morning. He has always been 100% fine after them previously.
The appointment was 11.30am and up to about an hour ago he seemed pretty normal. Mr P just came home for lunch and Cecil dog came over to us kind of like he was cowering, head held down and walking really slowly.
He had the new Lepto 4 (or at least new to my vets) Is this a normal side effect? He seems utterly miserable. Would some metacam be helpful?
He's sleeping now and hasn't been sick.

I hate seeing him like this, he's only really been ill once before, he's usually such a happy little thing :(
 
Maybe he has a bit of pain at injection site ? I have had dogs that are a little quiet after a booster, like horses I always give them a quiet 24 hours after a jab and they are usually fine next day. If you are concerned, or he shows any other symptoms there's no harm in giving your vet a call just for reassurance.
 
Google seems to think that Its vomiting, Itching, collapse that are the signs of a serious reaction and everything else will be fine. It's just sad seeing such a live wire so subdued. I'd hoped for a nice walk this afternoon but think that may just be me and Bert!
 
That's fine, I'm not too worried about what he does. I was more concerned as he has never had any form of reaction what so ever before today, but I suppose/hope the different vaccine explains that?
 
Mine reacted after getting the Lepto4 jab the first time- got a sizeable swelling at the injection site that went down after a few days. Maybe see if he is a bit sore at the site?
 
Sorry I missed that, He didnt appear to have particularly localised soreness but his whole neck/back was really stiff.

No I'd think twice after this, Is there an alternative then? This was what I was told had to be given as they no longer did the previous one he had had. I've never really looked into it, I just take them, get than jabbed and think no more of it.
I'm keen to avoid this again. Daughters dog wasn't great the evening after his either.
 
Mine have always had it with no bother. I know a lot of people don’t use it though.
Having heard of dogs dying of lepto, which sounds a terrible way to go, and I decided that I couldn’t risk not doing it.
My vets only offer 4 now, but apparently some vets will order in 2 or 3. I heard that out shooting yesterday, so is pure hearsay.
I do make sure mine have a quiet few days after.
 
Totally agree he needs it and I'd not turn it down because of the reaction, which incidentally I almost wish I'd recorded now because of how bad he was and how fast he snapped back out of it!
I just wondered if, as with Covid jabs ar first there may be different brands that give the same level of protection.
We aree switching vets after this though so will mentio to them, maybe a little dose of metacam before might help? I had a horse who used to get bute a few days before his flu/tet because he'd be unable to move after it.

Good plan to speak to the vet. My daughters whippet has paracetamol before her booster as she was sore after her first one, she is a drama queen though !
 
My GSD had a bad reaction to Lepto 4, but she is allergic to many things. She wouldn't eat, vomited, was very lethargic. Vets did an ultrasound as she was so tender around her stomach and poorly, she was on Pardale for a week. Lab had the same vaccination at the same time and had no side affects at all. GSD is a very sensitive allergic dog and does have a moderate reaction to the usual vaccines.

Poor thing! Poor you, that must have been quite scary. What will you do next year?

It was scary, she was a very poorly puppy. The vets usually give her pain meds then boxrest 4/5 days after the annual vaccines as she always has a reaction. They'll have to get a different Lepto vaccine next time for her.
Hopefully Cecil's 2nd dose won't be as bad as his first 🤞
 
Just rebooking at this because I was chatting to a friend abroad. Her dog had its vaccine the same day as Cec had his first.
She is now worried that her dog was given the old vaccine as it was only one dose. I guess different countries are more or less up to date.

They gave Cecil his second into his right glute instead of his neck and he’s absolutely fine this time.
 
We’ve used L4 where I work for absolutely years (so thousands- 10s of thousands of dogs) with no serious reactions directly linked to vaccine that I know of. (Although definitely some that are a bit sore for a few days at injection site or a bit lethargic & under the weather for a day or so… same as a lot of humans after a flu or Covid jab I guess)

At a rough guess we average 2-4 dogs PTS a year from confirmed lepto though due to organ failure (& usually a few more where there’s suspicion). Usually non vaccinated / lapsed vaccines but have had a couple of L2 vaccinated ones with this outcome.

The only dog I can recall testing positive for lepto and responding to treatment and surviving was L4 vaccinated (& had mild signs of liver disease rather than being bright yellow & in liver failure or with kidneys that had stopped functioning)

Glad he’s had a better time with the second dose, sometimes works out that way.

Horrid the cat had an awful reaction to his 1st vacc as a kitten but has been absolutely fine for all subsequent ones (thank god as he’s out & about a lot and likes to get in scraps so needs as much protection as possible for what I can protect him from)
