Yes I do, and will continue to do so even though my old boy is retired and won't be leaving the yard.
Why? If you have ever seen a horse with tetanus I doubt you would ask Absolutely horrific! Don't particularly need the flu I suppose although it is hardly a hardship to get the vet out for an MOT yearly anyway; he rarely needs the vet between times.
i do because she goes out quite a bit to shows and stuff and i just thought it was the done thing that everyone did :L hoping to register BE for a couple of 4yo's next year so they need to be vacc'd for that
I do, poor Loki (he of the massive needle phobia) is getting his next one on the 2nd but our vet is brill, she injects him before he has a chance to properly freak out
a. yard rules although they bent them for me - little one was unhandled so they were happy to wait until she trusted me, before getting vet out.
b. why risk it? gives me piece of mind.
c. we compete
If anyone had ever seen a horse with tetanus or with a bad case of 'flu then they would certainly make sure their horses were inoculated!
Winter of 1969, equine flu was rife in the UK as there was not a standard inoculation. Most racing was stopped and only horses that had come from the USA and had been inoculated, avoided being sick.
In a yard with eleven horses I was struggling to keep them warm and alive. Three were particularly hard hit and took about four months to get back to normal.
I have unsuccessfully tried to save four horses with tetanus, I learned that if a horse I had in my care was diagnosed with tetanus I would have it shot. I could not bear to see what they go through again.
Tetanus - Always always always (and its only biannual anyway)
Flu - yes for the young healthy girl who competes.
yes for any healthy horse
No for special cases for my old chap who goes nowhere and doesnt mix, lives at home and who got very very ill after flu jab and worming a few years back; for him the risks of flu are less than the risks of reaction.
yes, all of mine are vaccinated. I have them split into 2 groups, winter and summer, to spread out the cost. I have them vaccinated whether they go out and compete or hardly leave the premises, its worth the expense to me for some peace of mind.
Tetanus and flu, yes. EHV no - tried it on one as a youngster and he seemed to get sick as a result of the injections, so stopped that. Not considered strangles yet.
Yes, we always vaccinated for tetanus, then in last 10yrs have done flu and tetanus and would continue this. I am on a yard which stipulates jabs are done which is fine by me.
