Hi,

Quick Q re vaccinations.

If a horse has not been vaccinated previously or recently then how do you restart the process?

How many are there and how often are they done?

On average how much does it cost per vaccination?

- I will proberbly get shot for this but horse is not yet vaccinated. Most on my yard dont bother after one horse had a reaction and another then got flu 3 days after vac given, so nobody does it.
However, horse is showing this year and I am worried about infections etc.
Also I have never met my vet (he has never needed him bar the vetting!) and I thought it might be a good oppertunity to have a general check up.

Can anyone offer some advice please :)

You will need 3 vaccinations in total- one about 1-2 months after the first and then one about 6 months later. Prices vary but if you can take your horse to the clinic it will be cheaper as no call out fee. I can see that you wouldn't worry about flu but I think it is a little silly to not bother about a tetanus vaccination- if you've ever seen a horse suffer die of tetanus you might not be so comfortable with it.

Sorry, just re-read this and it sounds a bit mean! I don't mean to be- many people don't vaccinate I was just giving my oppinion!

No offence taken farrierlover :)

To be honest I have not thought about it in great detail (bad owner alert) as nobody on my yard vaccinates and if you ask they all have opinions on it.

I was also put off asmany said it would cost a fortune to get his vaccs started and he would need lots of vet visits in the space of a few weeks?
My vet is 2 hours away, but there is a new equine vet opening 20mins drive away, so I was thinking about regestering once they open next month and asking him to come out so I can meet him and he can vaccinate horse while he is here, but everyone said waste of money and time!

Will I have to vaccinate for 2 seperate things or are both done at once ?

Phew! Both vaccinations are done at the same time as one injection so not to worry about him leaking from pinholes..... I suppose it might be quite expensive if you have to pay for a 2 hour journey for call out but I think my vaccination was around £25 and another £30 for call out- not too bad as there were several to do together. If you just wanted to do tetanus I think the protocol may be different as some of the tetanus vaccinations are 3-5 yearly rather than the flu which is annual. I'd definately recommend it, I'm not bothered about flu so much although have to have them done for competing but would be quite worried about tet.

for tet they need one jab, another 4-6wks later, a booster after a year and then boosters every 2-3yrs depending on the brand used.

for flu they need one jab, the 2nd 21-92days later, a 3rd 150-215days after that then yearly boosters.
