After 3 years of assuming one of my horses had sweet itch, I finally managed to get an allergy test done at the weekend. He is allergic to most grasses (all, except "velvet grass"), moulds in hay, Ox-eye Daisy and dust mites!!

So a vaccine is being made in Holland which I really hope will be successful. His reaction is permanent all year round itching and he came out in lumps last week all over his neck and shoulders (although he'd never done this before).

Has anybody had any success with this?? He will be on a 6 month course to begin with which will mean I will have to inject him weekly at first, slowly increasing the amount & further apart. Depending on how the 6 months go, depends on if we have to continue longer etc.

I would really like to hear from anybody who's had a vaccine made for their allergic horse.

I had the blood test done about a month ago. My horse is allergic to loads of things too and includes things I just cant stop him coming into contact with. In the mean time my horse has stopped itching, so Im waiting till he starts again to start the vaccine as although hes allergic to grasses etc Im now convinced its fly related even though they came back borderline positive. I have cut out Alfalfa and Wheat from his diet though.
I have heard of a horse thats been succesfully treated by the vaccine but apparantly it has to be repeated as it doesnt last forever.
Please let us know how you get on.
