Sienna has a lot of tearing and bleeding on one side of her vulva. My best guess is that she and Coco have consumated their relationship. He is very well endowed and I suspect that he has damaged her.

It's odd because if he's done this I would expect her to have kicked him or similar, but she hasn't I would also expect her to have slobber/bites etc on her but there's nothing - although it did rain in the night.

We've also said she is gay, so I'm quite shocked that she would stand for any male.

The vet is coming. I got her in and gave her a danilon. She stood to let me start to clean it, but was trembling and I think she needs sedation/pain relief for a proper clean.

There was lots of blood and she is hot, which really worries me. She did a big pee, is not very swollen and is moving happily.

Do you think that sounds logical, what do I need to be careful of. I assume she will be pumped full of anti b's and thoroughly cleaned, can't see any purpose in stitching. Any comments/experiences would be much appreciated.

He is very masculine, though never in a sexual way. He will intimidate people but has always been quite submissive and amiable with other horses.
I like mixed sex groups and have never had any trouble, but henceforth will have to seperate them, which is a pity. I shall also have to have him tested when the vet comes, but really he isn't my concern. I am more concerned whether it is 'normal' for mares to have such tears/rips if they have been covered, and whether there are complications I need to be especially concerned about.

agreed. poor mare:( how old is she? could she be preggers?

She isn't a poor mare especially. She is completely dominant in teh herd and I've had issues with her trying to attack a stallion when she was out competing. The thought of any gelding getting her to stand seemed ridiculous. I suppose horses will be horses though and Coco is rather handsome....

I doubt very much if she is preggers, though would be delighted if she were from this union.

Sorry I dont know if it is normal for mares to be hurt this badly from covering, but recently my mare did badly cut her vagina while scratching her backside a little too vigorously on a post. It was not stitched (if it had been anywhere else I think it would have needed stitches as was deep) but thoroughly cleaned out 3x a day.The cut healed very quickly and within 3 days you would hardly have known she had been injured. Hope she gets over it quickly, perhaps she will again be chasing the boys away!

I don't know why I didn't think of this. I went and had a look at the top of the field where they were standing and couldn't see anything generally suspicious, but wil go and have a hunt round for evidence of anything she could have rubbed herself on. That's really helpful Fiaba thankyou.

Yes mares can get torn when being covered by a stallion, usually though it happens in loose coverings ie. mare and stallion are together and stallion is basically humping the hell out of the mare!! I have also heard of mares dying from perforated guts as the stallion missed and got the wrong hole - you have to be very careful! - they can also get a perforated reproductive tract too.
If your gelding is a rig you need to find out - one because the retained testicle can turn cancerous and kill the horse so needs it removing,
2 if he is getting rough with mares he is going to potentially cost you a bomb in vet bills,
3 you DEFINITELY don't want a foal from this possible rig!! Usually they are infertile as the semen is at too high a temperature but it is possible, it is also a congenital defect so can be passed on to the foal.
The vet will be able to point you in the right direction for treatment and to make sure she has no internal injuries, better safe than sorry, and cover her with antibiotics. I doubt a vet would stitch because of the age of injury, the fact it's a tear and not a clean cut, and location - vaginal tears do heal very well on their own. I'd also get a blood sample from the gelding at the same time to test for testosterone levels. If they are high you can get the mare jabbed to make sure she is not in foal and get the gelding booked in to get his lost nut found!!!:D

have heard this term before. whats a rig?

A Rig is either a castrated male that has retained the mental attitude of a stallion in that it tries to cover mares. It can be as a result of incomplete gelding - eg a testicle left inside - not able to be found at time of gelding, (slack vet) some say it can be a result of hormone activating tissue being left behind.

I had a pony that I know was gelded fully - both testicles in the bucket - but would mount the mares - he had sired a foal prior to being gelded so could have retained the memories.
