Hi do any of you use valerian to help with nervous/tense horses? Ok so you can't use it for competition but just wondered to use it initially for working at home/training day s to help with the nerves?
Or should I just up the quantity of magnesium-base calmer (as nothing I've tried seems to work), or maybe just give "pure" magnesium on its own such as from naturalhorsesupplies?
What do you think?

Magnesium will only work if your horse has low levels in the first place. I have tried everything with my tb and never found anything that has worked.

Ditto LizzieJ on the magnesium so little point in upping the dose tbh.

I use a valerian calmer on my mare. IMO it works well. It is the only thing that does!

TTC just wondering if it might be an idea for you to get your grazing and hay analysed, so you can find out what it's deficient in and then feed a calmer according to this?

The only thing I have found that works is Science Supplements ProKalm. It is not magnesium based - IMHO these don't work. It is also 100% competition legal, unlike valerian. I know lots of people have used it very successfully, have a look at their website and read some of the testamonials. Only downside is that it is a bit expensive, but does actually do what it says.

Thanks everyone. supacalm makes no difference. Admit to never hearing of ProKalm T/S so will do some research.
Yes, realise that magnesium only works if there is a deficiency; that's why so desperate to find something that does which is legal in comps, altough happy to try valerian at clinics to see if it helps get the right thought processes in place!
