I am looking into getting a herbal calmer for Axey after yesterdays antics and have a leaflet by Equine Herbals that has a calmer which contains valerian that sounds like it would be very effective.
It says that Valerian is now banned, and should not be used in competition where testing applies, but at the level I am showing and competeing, would I be allowed to use it?

Sorry, I do local level showing and prelim unaffiliated dressage

I've never known any local shows to implement testing so I wouldn't worry about it - I wouldn't recommend this one but i've known people to take their horses to local shows on acp (a sedative used by vets)! I don't think a herbal version is anything to be penalised for at that level.

Yes I used to use it on dressage loon before I affilliated. I used Dorwest liquid which worked really well. If not try Cool Calm and Collected , not got Valerian in but seems to work.

Just read an article from H&H which states that its only banned for use under 'rules' FEI, Jockey Club and BSJA. I don't compete under any of those so I should be ok!

Moggy, who makes Cool Calm and Collected?

Wendals Herbs Special Arab Calmer is excellent and very good value for money compared to Equifeast's Cool, Calm and Collected. It is very good for all breeds, not just Arabs (!) and does contain Valerian. Valerian is only banned for horses competing under rules, so at local unaffiliated level you should be fine.

Thank you! I've never heard of a calmer specially for Arabs lol
Axel is half Arab so it might just be the thing for us, and it contains valerian too, double bonus

I'll keep a look out for that, thanks again!

most unaffiliated competitions run under affiliated rules if you check the schedules. ok, you're not gonna get drug tested at local level, but it does go against the rules to used banned substances and against the whole spirit of the competition as you get an unfair advantage compared to those willing to stick to the rules - same with using bute to be able to compete - similar sort of thing. plenty of calmers around that are competition legal.

I get your point star, but tbh the way Axey is going at the moment anyway, I don't think I'm getting an unfair advantage at all

He's turned in to the horse from hell! I normally wouldn't go to such trouble but if he behaves like he did yesterday at Heathfield on saturday then either myself or the judge will get bucked off

What calmers do you recommend? Nothing has worked so far and I've tried loads...

Ooo - are you doing Heathfield? What class/time - I'm hopefully going to spectate in the morning.

BTW: Friend of mine used to use Equine America's SoKalm with successful results - I think that is competition legal.

Hi TGM I'm doing the Part Bred Arab class, its on about 3.30 in ring 4.

if you see me come over and say Hi, I'm sure you'll recognise Axey, he'll be the really naughty one!!

Edited to say, I've tried the So Kalm paste and it just made him tired but still spooky!

P_G: Let me know how Archie is on it. Ive put Gen on SuperCalm by Global Herbs but he isnt that keen on eating it and it smells horrible. Mind you he WAS good on Sat!!

I'm using a few things from The equine herbals range (not all on the same horse though!!) & have been very impressed with their effectivness & take up speed.
