I know its banned from competitions, but what about for hacking in company, hunting and fun rides?Zak gets so excited when in company or on fun rides, and mum finds it really hard and not enjoyable to control him. Ive tried calmers but none work, is valerian a bad idea?Ive read it can alter their actual state or something-is it something i shouldnt touch with a barge pole?

I haven't heard of it altering a horses state (what do you mean by this?) But it is a fairly effective natural clamer, my university did a study on it a few years ago and the results were quite promising though it doesn't work for all horses. I believe it works best when fed long term though so probably wouldn't have much effect if you only fed it as one offs before specific activities, unless you know some other way to give it! Can't see any harm in trying though.

it can be quite potent which is why it is a bannad substance. it also acts upon the nervous system in a simmilar way to some mild sedatives but without the doped side they are fully awear of whats going on. commonly found in herbal sleeping pills for humans. guess it like anything though works diff on diff horses. do have quite a bit of info on it as did a project on it.

I tried feeding my girl valerian essence to calm her (years ago). It did work...but it smelled like rotten cabbage and my Working Pupils rebelled and refused to add it to her feed!

Ive used it i would say use it worked on my mare that would not calm down for any of these other products ¬!!!

You would only get tested at a huge european event to so i wouldnt worry !!

Valerian acts as a mild sedative which is one of the reasons it was banned for competition, the other reason is that it can mask other, more potent drugs. If you wanted to use it for hacking I would not worry too much.

Where do you get it from??? I would be interested if i have to bring merlin in over the winter as he stresses if he cant see other horses or knows they are out and he is in.
