can anyone advise about valerian as a short term calmer for my very stressed, weaving new horse - where can it be bought, is it advisable, and can i give the human ones? thanks x

I managed to get hold of some at my local health food shop. Later my vet managed to get hold of some for me.
It's supposed to be marvellous stuff (I didn't use it for very long as it turned out to be rather pricey and I was very irritated that dosage was given in grammes, but there was no scoop or anything to let me know how much I was feeding...

Lookie here to see how versatile Valerian is

It worked really well for my warmblood when I started competing him. It just seems to take the edge off. I think it was Dorwest that I got it from. I used the liquid as it was only used for shows. If you contact them they were really helpful and gave me all the info I needed. Global herbs and Hilton herbs do a calming mix for stressed horses but I think they are both valerian free now.

Wendals Herbs do one with valerian. They also do a Special Calmer which has valerian and is suitable for very stressy horses. It costs £18.00 per bucket and should last at least a month on a horse the size of your mare.
