My pony is being a bit spoilt at the moment and is getting new treats to try.

So far he has had:
a swede on a string (pulled it off the string and chased it round his stable!!)
a pear (loved it!)
parsnips (wouldn't eat them

)

Is there anywhere I could find a definitive list of what is safe for horses to eat, so I can pick some more little treats for him?

Thanksies

I think that most things are OK, appart from potatoes. Never met one that would eat cabbage yet though.

Mine likes the stalks from the broccoli after we have had the tops for tea.

Mine loves cabbage and cauliflower,
also eats onions, tops and the onion- don't let him have much though cos am not convinced is a good idea and makes his breath smell. Think he has had beetroot too.

As far as I know just not potatoes but moderation is probably a good thing

Have discovered this only cos he has grabbed from the wheelbarrow of the veg garden scraps.

doesn't like broccoli, my friends horse used to love it

loves pears cos they are the messiest.

Magnus is OBSESSED with swede, I've never seen anything like it. He would walk over hot coals for a swede, his whole personality changes. He is impressive though as he can fit a whole one in his mouth and bite it in half in one go..... damn shires

Henry eats bananas plus peel and most other fruits, but hates cabbage, as does his little pal. He's also a dab hand at eating plumbs, grinding it around his mouth and then spitting a VERY clean stone out. God knows where he learnt that technique, as I found out by accident!

I put whole cabbages and swedes out for my shetlands as a treat, I throw them out in the dry parts of the field and it keeps them occupied for a while.
also put them in the stable whole for my old boy Merlin, as he's on box rest and has a tendency to get bored.

this is probably a dumb question, but do you feed things like suedes and turnips whole, or do peel them?

Give them whole- no need to peel

Cabbages have high levels of goitrogens in and as such are bad for horses. Oranges have high levels of vitamin C, and as horses make their own vitamin C they are also bad for them. I imagine the odd segment once in a blue moon won't kill them, but I won't let an orange or cabbage within 100yds of my horse...

Governor gorges himself on damsons given half a chance. I only found out when I brought him in one day and he was spitting pips out the whole way across the field.

He is an absolute banana fiend too!

We don't get very adventurous with fruits and veg though, its just not worth the risk.

If you put a hole through the middle of a swede with a skewer/knitting needle/phillips screwdriver, (don't use a flat one as it will split it) thread a bit of string through it and hang it in the middle of the stable your horse will have hours of fun trying to eat it. My old boy wouldn't play with any expensive toys but a swede would keep him quiet for hours! The bigger the swede the better as he can't get hold of it so easily! Also don't put it too close to the wall either or he'll pin it against the wall to get a better purchase on it!

I am a wedding caterer so often do melon as a starter. Use all the skin for the horses. Discovered when one of mine found them in a carrier bag and scoffed the lot. Very messy to eat though- I didn't know how much juice was in the skin!
He is also very partial to coke and tomato sauce on chips, molests us for them at shows!
