Well on viewing a post in the SB I was intrested to see how many veggies there were out there and how many use a leather saddle/bridle ect. Also would you eat horse meat? If you knew it had been humanely raised/killed?

I'm vegetarian. I wear leather boots and have leather bridles. I drink milk but dont eat meat or buy anything with fur trim (just in case is cat or dog)

No I'm not, but it has made me think about things with whats been on TV recently.

I think I would try horse meat, I don't see why it's any different to eating any other animal IF it has been humanely raised/killed.

Thanks for your input people

Like Starbucks I don't see why eating one animal is different than another. I am vegertarian but it was a desician I made at about the age of 6 or 7 years old so not terribly well informed, it was a case of animals being killed is creul FULL STOP no background knowlage. Now I think I would eat it but I don't because not eating it for along time makes it seem quite strange and all I can think of is the little animal running around

Vegan.

I buy as little leather as possible and am always on the lookout for synthetic alternatives, but WOWs & comfort bridles don't come in synthetic yet. I am uncomfortable about using leather, but sometimes there isn't a solution.

I buy shoes, belts etc from Vegetarian Shoes.

I'm a vegetarian (have been for 15 years). I use leather tack on my horse - my reasons were explained in SB, but, basically I don't feel *too* bad about it because if the cow is going to be killed for meat (which I have no problem with if it has been raised and slaughtered in a humane way) I would rather every bit go to use. I use as little leather as possible, but finding synthetic alternatives for horse tack is difficult and not always suitable.

I put no to eating horse meat, as I don't eat any meat. I have no problem with it (again if done humanely) as I don't see how eating horse is any different to eating cow etc.

I'm also a veggie and echo rforsyth1984 views, the leather is a by-product from the slaughterhouse.

I wouldn't be comfortable about using or wearing any form of animal skin if it was reared/killed purely for its hide.

I'm not veggie, but I only eat free range chicken and meat that I know the origins of - ie it has been raised in an humane environment. I would much rather go out and kill a pheasant and eat it than buy a poor battery chicken off the shelf. I don't see a problem with eating meat if it is raised properly.

btw - I'm not loaded - I only eat meat about once a week because I'd rather pay more for well cared for animals and eat a small amount of meat less often, than eat a pile of it every day and not know where it's come from.

This is exactly how I feel about meat. I feel that it is far more responsible to eat meat from a well known source rather than the dreaded Tescos. I buy my meat from my local butcher, or one of the farm shops round where I live. It is more expensive, but I just eat it less often, however I know that they know the farmer (or is the farmer) and that their meat is raised and killed humanely.

One of the things that bothers me (since I watched Jamie's Fowl Dinners) is that though I buy Organic/Free Range eggs, the amount of Battery eggs in everyday foodstuffs such as Helman's Mayo really bothers me. It is an industry I want as little to do with as possible. There is very little alternative though. (Yea I can make my own mayo, but it is very time consuming and doesn't last so long... So what to do?!)

minkymoo - I think its nearly impossible to avoid

Not only is it things like mayo, but eating out in cafes/resturants/shop bought sarnies (egg being the only veggie option other than cheese, usually) and takeaways - I love egg fried rice but I bet the local take-aways dont use free range!

Even quorn used to use battery eggs

Excellent sentiments - me too, the only thing I am not so keen on is organic meat. In priciple I agree but afetr doing meat inspection of organic pig carcasses I was rather put off by the amount of parasites

i knew a vegan once, she was quite militant about it, however she had leather tack for her horses which i found a bit off

i am a veggy i just dont like the thought of eating something thats been running around, my mum still tries to give me real meat saying its quorn or some other alternative but because i haven't eaten meat for so long it acctually makes me throw up immediatley(sp) i am not one of those people that wont try anything and says they dont like it before they have even tried it however i dont think i could bring myself to eat horse meat just like i couldn't eat beef if i had hand raised it and it had been like a pet to me

I'm a vegan and have been since the age of about 5, I have a problem with the way stock animals are kept and I know for a fact that free range and organically raised animals aren't that more better off.
Free range just means that they're not stacked on top of each other- it doesn't mean that they're all sharing a nice little meadow somewhere where they have the space to run and frolic!
I'd love to see more acceptable guidelines about their keeping but then the price of meat really would soar.

I do use leather tack on my horse as I havn't found anything that moulds to fit the horse as well, it's lasts a lifetime and i'd rather it be used if it does the job better than synthetic.
I always use leather stirrup leathers for the safety aspect.
I do wear synthetic boots and long for the day they bring out saxon equi leather boots in a smaller size!
that may sound hypocritical to some but I do always try to find
a non leather alternative but there's not much out there that does the job as well.
