Just wondering what everyone gives their horses?

We used to feed potato peelings occasionally but have since found out they are poisoness (we were always told they were ok).

We also feed parsnips, carrots, apples, cabbage, strawberrys, pears and bananas.

They usually have carrots in their daily feeds, then the rest as occasionaly treats

Mainly carrots and apples

Put peelings in on a Sunday from every thing except the pot's...

Friend of mine feeds hers bananas which I find odd, even odder is watching the mare pealing it and eating just the fruit!

No berries or any thing like that... Bit of fresh ginger in the winter too which he will only eat if grated very finely...

You can feed most veg / fruit except things from the Solonacae family - which includes both potatoes and peanuts, but also deadly nightshade and, bizarrely, chillis and tomatoes. The reason is that they have an alkaloid which is potenatially poisonous. Not only to horses but also potentially to us. Try feeding your enemy raw green potatoes and see what happens. (No - on second thoughts don't!)

Other than that horses like most things. Although grapes tend to go through them without being crunched! Watch out for stuff with high sugar if you have a lami prone or one that gets a bit of a sugar rush!

Been trying mine on a range of different stuff this winter to try to compensate for a lack of turnout (mud, mud and more mud!!!). So in addition to the usual carrots, he'll also happily eat apples, pears, parsnips and - strangely - mandarin oranges. Have also tried without success cabbage, broccoli, celery, swede, bananas (my old horse loved them) and raw beetroot. I guess horses, like us, have their likes and dislikes - I'm not much for swede myself!!.

I've also discovered that he loves marmite which I give him as a treat spread on bits of plain cracker or just smeared on the inside of his feed bowl so he can lick it off ...

Just shows there's no accounting for taste.
