Sorry, couldn't find answer in searches.

Looking to get a trailer, but the insurance costs for a 4x4 are silly, even for an over 30 year old!

What other vehicles do you tow a trailer with?

(for 1 ligtweight TB)

Thanks

Hi, I have a vauxhall frontera as I too couldn't afford a 'proper' 4x4 as too expensive to tax and insure. I have a diesel lwb version which tows 2800kgs (an Ifor 505 max weight is about 2300kgs I believe) so more than enough oomph. I pay £250 per year to tax it and it costs me about £550 to insure - only so much because I lost almost all of my no claims last year (9 years to 3  ) They do get some pretty bad press for a couple of niggly problems, but also some people only have good things to say, guess it depends whether you get a good one. Oh, and I get about 33/34mpg out of mine which I think is pretty good considering its 12 years old.

Depends what you want from a 4x4 - I am 25 - and insure a Landrover Freelander - LReg for 350quid.
Does a crackiing job!

2 wheel wise - Dad did used to use a volvo - Did well with that, a rice trailer, and 2 chubby ponies!

Um I would be suprised if a big car is any cheaper than a 4x4 to insure as it would need to be say a V70 volvo , merc e class or A6 audi !! people tow ponys with mondeo's but realy you need some towing capacity in hand to be safe which means a proper 4x4 ... and that is surely the most important thing more so than trying to save a few quid ???...

I have a ford Scorpio estate to tow with. It costs me £400 a year third party so no less than a 4x4 to insure sadly :(

They don't make them anymore either. I have mine as it was a very kind gift from my out laws. If I'd been forced to buy I'd have bought a 4WD as it wouldn't cost any more to run.

Anywho, your options I think, are probably limited to a big Volvo, the Suburu Forester or a big Merc or BMW. Given that you want to tow a horse not ponies.
