Veiwing a 3yr old

I am going to view a 3 yr old in 2 hours, however what am I looking for ?

I am going to ask to see him led, feet picked up ect

In the advert it says 'Ready to be broken', is it unreasonable to expect to see him being lunged/longreined?
 
Well yes... lungeing/longreining is part of the breaking in process so if he is 'ready to be broken' I would not expect him to have done any of the above.

I would expect to see him loose schooled if they have the facilities.

You should look at his conformation. Limbs, feet, the way the neck is set on etc. And how he moves. Does he dish, plait etc. Is he close behind?

Also try and assess his temperament from the way he is handled. Is he happy to be lead, have his feet picked up etc.
 
My youngsters are expected to behave when being led, alone or in company, pick their feet up and tie up. If they have been shown they will trot out in hand, otherwise anyone looking at them will see them in the field or stable, and loose on the arena.
The only way you would see any of mine being lunged is if I had started to break them in.

I would think you should be able to see it lunge,if they have started it,I would like to see a youngster loose to assess movement and to some degree temperament.
It really depends what you are looking for it to do in the future and the facilities the sellers have,make sure you see it trot on a level surface.
 
bought my chap as unbacked 3 year old although someone had sat on him - I watched him being caught - taken away from his herd brought to the arena and then watched him being loose schooled (or rather ushered round) then I leant over him - picked up feet - checked him over.

What I was looking for was movement and also attitude - when loose schooled he trotted/cantered round and jumped over a block in the arena without being asked but then came immediately back to stand near us - didnt seem bothered in the slightest !

may also be worth asking to see him boxed (although i didnt ask) as nothing worse than getting there when go to pick up if purchase and not being able to load the bugger !
