I'll be doing in-hand Sports Horse and in-hand Riding Horse at an upcoming county show with my TB x ID mare. I normally only do side saddle showing but since my new ned won't be ready for side saddle just yet and I've always wanted to go to this show, we'll do some inhand.
Being tall and not-so-slim, I thought I had found the perfect tweed jacket on Ebay for a cheap price but then was horrified to read that velvet collars are not appropriate for showing, especially county level. Since, in hand showing isn't something we are going to do regularly (as soon as ned is ss ready, then it's ss showing again only), I am loathe to fork out £££ on a jacket just because it doesn't have a velvet collar. There is not so much selection in a tall 16/18 as most people seem to shorten the sleeves on Ebay, lol.

I've already resigned myself to getting a navy hat and cream breeches but is a velvet collar all that bad??

I have never once been told off or even had my velvet collar mentioned and I have had my jacket in in-hand and ridden classes at all levels from local shows to HOYS qualifiers for the last 10 years or so.

No it doesnt matter! If you like the jacket, get it!

Big no to breeches for inhand classes though! Go for trousers instead

Velvet in those classes would be fine!

Personally I have my jackets made without, but there's no navy in my tweed of choice and I like it when the velvet matches the hat. No green/burgundy/orange hats for me!
