Ventapulmin hasn't sorted my boy's wheezing so we are trying him an inhaler (beclate I think). If this one doesn't work we will try a stronger one as £80 per canister! Has anyone used an inhaler and how successful was it?
tried and inhaler to no avail, had hims scoped and washed out and antibiotics matched again to no avail finally oral steroids did the trick but I was really worried about giving my horse them.
The breathing problems can be a long road to sort out and you have my sympathies.
He has got really fat so the vet won't inject steroids - its a bit catch 22 as he won't lose weight until he can be ridden twice a day, but I can't do that until he is better and of course being heavy makes his breathing worse. I think you are right though - its going to be a long road
mine had ventapulmin and was still coughing after so was then scoped and trac wash done wich showed no infection but inflamation so was put on two inhalers beclazone (about £50+ per one and it is an inhaled steroid) and ventalin (£10 per one) she had to have them twice a day for two weeks starting at 10 of each x a day then after two weeks stoped the ventailn and gradually reduce the beclazone she did end up on the beclazone one for longer as she keepet getting flair ups as i was trying to wean her off it. as it is an inhaled steriod most the drug stays in the lung tissue so therefore the risks assoisated with steroids are greatly reduced when used this way but im sur if you are concered then your vet can explain it. mine was on the steriod one for about 3.5 months and didn't have any problems.
I tried the inhaler on my mare. She is very good on the ground and you can even fly spary between her ears, but there was no way on this earth she was going to let me near her with the inhaler.
He has breathing problems related to dust inhalation - so no hay. The vet say to give him 1% of his body weight in hay per day and his snack ball with high fibre nuts.
Yes - the vet has explained that the risk of inhaled steroids is small compared to injected ones. Its interesting that she has had to keep having to have the steroid due to flair ups and the vet says he might need to be on them on and off for the rest of his life if they work.
Unfortunately sometimes Ventipulmin dosen't work and neither do the inhalers.
However i was recommended Winergy Ventilate and haven't looked back, fantastic stuff and can be fed in your hand as it is pelleted. I saw a remarkable difference after using it and only weaned him off it about 3 mths ago, so far so good but i'll not hesitate to give him it again.
Have recommended it to 2 other people who have had the same results as well for 2 different breathing problems/irritations.

Yep me too - the vet and I managed one puff then we spent the next 5 minutes trying to get P from launching in the air with me attached. Have to say the steroid tablets gave him laminitis as well. I tried Winergy Ventilate and that made no difference whatsoever. The only thing that helped was time and a change of season.
