After months of lameness, x rays and nerve blocks and loads of time off work i have got another vet up to look at my horse and he has told me that the x rays that were done previous are non diagnostic!

so basically a waste of time? My poor horse was in agony after the vet pulled and hauled at her feet and actually fell over, now the new vet wants me to take her in to their surgery and get the nerve blocks and x rays re done as they can't see anything on the old ones as they are such poor quality!

so now i am very hacked off at having to put her through that again, worried that because the last ones were so bad something might have been missed and she has been in pain for so long when something could have been done about it.

and needless to say i am RAGING at the fact that the previosu vet misled me and did not tell me how poor quality the last x rays were and the fact that my insurance will not pay for double treatment so i will need to pay for the x rays and nerve blocks to be done again :-(

Anyone got any advice i am highly tempted to tell the old vet to stick her bill up her bum!!!!

I wouldnt be happy paying for the xrays but as for the blocks I assume they were done correctly so would expect to pay for those.

Contact the RCVS and ask for advice regarding the payment to the first vet. If she/he hasn't done what they are to be paid for to a satisfactory standard then I think you are entitled to claim re-imbursement or not make full payment.

This happened to me some years ago and it was only when the xrays were reviewed by Sue Dyson at the AHT that I knew they were too poor for diagnostic purposes. I complained but got nowhere but the insurance company did pay up for the AHT set and I left it with them to sort out the first practice (not my vet - my daughter was away at school with horse and it was a large practice the school used). I did write to the senior practice member but got a "bog standard" reply saying "sorry you feel that way but we think they were ok". I suspect it was never dealt with properly but it was in Wiltshire which is a long way from where I live and it was all too upsetting at the time anyway. Interestingly she was also a female vet!

I had this vet was supposed to xray left leg but xray right leg only found out as my horse was still in pain month later so decided to go to another vet because i wasnt happy with his treatment his mistake cost me1700pounds and the delay has done perment damage

I had a very similar thing with my previous horse who was misdiagnosed as suffering from EHV (Equine Herpes Virus) following xrays done on his neck bones from a portable xray machine used by my vets when in fact he had advanced wobblers syndrome. The xrays showed no problems with the bones despite him having advanced CVM problems. After wasting many weeks and additional expense to not just myself but other liveries after their horses all had to be blood tested and swabbed for EHV it was finally agreed that the 'supposed EHV' was not following the route EHV would follow and they therefore concluded he did not have this after all so after much badgering on my part eventually referred him to Liverpool (Philip Leverhulme) where following xrays of their highly powered stand up xray machine, wobblers was diagnosed and Rommy was pts to prevent further suffering, within two hours of first arriving at the hospital. The portable xray machine my vets had used was NOT suitable for such xrays. I wrote and complained to the vets in question, but of course they felt they had followed the correct cause of action for what they believed was wrong with my horse in the first place, including using the xray machine and although they had wrongly diagnosed the horse (as had the chiropractor numerous times) they felt that the misdiagnosis was a natural progression they had to go along to rule out various things.

So basically I know how you must feel about the situation your horse has been through and maybe you should put pen to paper and let your old vets know how you feel. Even if it won't do any good it might help a future horse being xrayed in this way.

I have come to the conclusion that vets will cover their ar#es, thy will always say they acted in the best possible way for the horse involved. All complaints seem to be poo poo'd as they don't seem to be in the wrong...ever. Sorry, I would put it down to experience and try and crack on with the horse's welfare. I have just changed vets as my practise, who I have been with for 10 yrs have took the p and ripped my insurance company and me off, for the 3rd time.

I agree with your comments wholeheartedly.

Vets should not be allowed to just shrug off these complaints.
They all carry Professional Indemnity Insurance to cover themselves for Negligence.
Get serious with them as they have the insurance to cover themselves for cases just like this so should pay up.

we had 4 different sets of x-rays done on my horse and nerve blocked him twice, it wasn't until we had an MRI scan done that we found a hairline fracture in his pedel bone... MRI cost 1500 but wouldn't have found it otherwise...

My vet came out the other day (from LEH) and brought with him a mobile x-ray machine! It was AMAZING!!! like a digital camera, *click* and 10 seconds later the image was on a screen! this way he could discuss foot balance and stuff with my farrier who was there too! I did ask and the machine cost about 50k!!!!
