Went to buy my boy a new girth today as his current one has stretched in the wrong places and the woman in the shop told me she had a slightly smaller girth than the size I needed in stock and that if I needed a bigger one he should be on restricted grazing!!!!!!!!

It may be that he is as fat as a pig and that I feed him all day long or it could be that he is a big horse who is as thin as a rake- the thing that really really made me angry is that she doesn't have a clue having never seen him or spoken to me before that comment. Why do people assume they are qualified to tell you how to manage your horse in this way.

The next most annoying thing is that I felt moved to justify his need of the bigger girth rather than being able to think of some cutting and above it all remark

i know how you feel.
a while back my cob had 3 months off due to a field injury and when i was getting him back into work was on a hack and an old man said 'he's carrying some weight isnt he?' , now i was a bit miffed (he wasnt actually fat) and muttered something about him being a cob and hurried on, but was seething about people feeling free to make rude comments without knowing anything - wish i was rude so could have said something cutting and witty instead of scurrying off...

what is this thing some saddlers seem to have at the mo for trying to sell you things that dont fit?
on 2 occasions ive rang a mail order place for boots and a hat, to be told they didnt have them in the size i requested, would i like such and such a size? (well, no, because then they wouldnt FIT!)

How very annoying. We have a sort of horsey/pet shop near us (which I try not to use), where the proprietor will try hard not to sell you what you want. 'No, you don't want that, you want this..' If I did, I'd have asked for it!! It's not that I mind real advice, but this guy is such a know-all.

I tend to ask them questions they can't answer...my response would have been 'Oh, right, he's 15.2hh...what should he weigh then, in kilograms? You sound as if you should know and I'll be able to check him to see how obese he is'
She'll never know...and you can smug your way out of the shop.
Or have you tried asking her tricky questions...like 'what do they use to tan the leather before they make it into saddles?' and 'what is the tree of this saddle made of?'
