went to go and ride to it this morning and it is so much fun! but does anyone know how many different types of music u should have per pace? i got sent a choice of about 7 for each pace, do i just pick one or can u pick two for each pace?

You only get between 4 1/2 and 5 mins to fit on all the compulsory movement. I doubt you will have time to do two lots of canter walk etc.

I usually use on bit of walk/trot/canter for my intro, a different bit for my first trot work, change to walk, change to canter and then possibly use a completely different bit of trot to finish.

Dont forget to send you paperwork off to BD though listing all you have used and how much of it. It is illegal not to do so.

If you're using a "professional" music complier, they should give you the info needed to complete the BD music record form. If they're any good, they'll fill out the form for you so all you have to do is post it off.

A slight variation on Sparklet's comment is - assuming you trot into the arena and end in trot - to use the same piece of music for both. That has the effect of bringing the routine "full circle" and making a complete performance of it.

When picking the music you want to use from the selections sent, do try and make sure that they are all of a similiar theme and style which, again, helps to make the performance rounded. However, the most important thing is that you really like the music you're going to use so you really enjoy riding to it. If you enjoy it, you'll ride better and have more fun - and that's what it's all about.

thanks guys! yea i am so excited-i rode to the draft snippets of music this morning and there are some i like more than others!! some fit just perfectly and some dont give quite the same affect. i am using a company to do it so i assume they will sort out all the paper work and everything for me-i hope!
i wish there were qualifiers thru the winter but there dont seem to be any...is that right? in the schedule they seem to run from mayish-octoberish from what i remember...
Im so exicted!!!!!

il probably be rubbish at it but it is so much fun making it all up!!

I'm one of those idiots who uses music editing software under some deluded notion that it will be more rewarding in the end....how wrong can I be?

I spent over three weeks putting together my masterpeice despite continual threats of divorce from my hubby. I served it up to a very discerning judge at the weekend accompanied by some marvelous dressage...... erm

except for the wrong canter strike off and the stifled walk so the music could catch up only to be informed that my horse would look much better with jolly light music. Rewarding.....my a***!

Ho hum...the trawl is on again for new music and I think it probably wise to heed your words of wisdom about bringing the music full circle because I really cant afford to get anything else wrong.

I must admit I am becoming more and more impressed with these music editing places if they not only do the music but also the paperwork.

ur so brave to do it on your own!! would be a great thing to do tho...but I wouldnt even know where to start!!!

The hardest bit is finding music that you like which will not sound distorted if the speed is changed - it also has to suit your horse. I thought I had it cracked last time but it just shows how wrong you can be.

I have found some more music so fingers crossed I can edit it and this time the judge will like it and I will not squash my horse if I am in front of the music but will turn a circle.

Do let me know how you get on....its so bl**dy frustrating but fantastic when you get it right. Its the only time I have ever smiled throughout a dressage test

...although the smile did disappear at the results board.

Hi
I think it is better to be behind your music as in a 20x60 arena at least you can turn a bit early and you tend to ride the movements forward but try not to rush.We did a riding club one in a 20x40 and was in front of my music and slowed down which looks awful. This week we did a BD one and came 2nd but my music is not right for my horse.I am going to video a ground plan this week and watch it to a lot of music then if I like something I am going to get a pro to sort it for me I think as I want it really right before regionals

well it is something really new for me and i thought i would give it a go!! even if i do rubbish at it it seems to be fun doing it!!

I did RC music last year - not going to quals this year as I have other committments. A few years ago doing RC music was a guarenteed qualification to the nationals because no-one did it, but is has soared in popularity recently.

Our local big cheese thinks it is the way forward for dressage in the future because it draws in spectators (you actually get a round of applause at the end of your test!

Well done for getting qualified

If you are out of synch with your music before you get to the walk, then it is realtively easy to adjust it pretty much regardless of what you had originally planned to do.

Let's say you had a simple plan of walking at A, riding one short diagonal KB in free walk and then turning and riding the second short diagonal BH in medium with your next trans at C. If you are behind and need to make up ground, then rather than walking right across the diagonals, go to the 3/4 or even the centre line and make your turn there.

If you are ahead and need to cover more ground, turn the movement into a serpentine. As you will have kept trotting until the walk music started, (as you're riding to your music not the markers aren't you?) - then you will have ridden the first part of the serpentine in trot in order not to get hopelessly ahead down the long side. Or, you could ride a 10m circle at A, coming back to walk on the circle when the music changes and then adjust your line as above depending on how much music you have left before your transition out of walk.

I am a great fan of circles in walk - plan to do a 15m circle which can be adjusted to 12 or 10m if behind, or 18/20m if ahead, and the flow of the pattern isn't interrupted.

Remember, the judge doesn't know what you intended, so as long as you smile and give the impression that you really meant to do that movement anyway, they won't know any different.

You are right I must step outside of the 'marker straightjacket' - I get too hooked on what I should be doing at C, E, D etc that the my poor horse gets squashed or run off her feet.

I am having another go in three weeks and intend to loosen up my routine a bit so there is a bit of flexibility - I'm not defeated yet. Just ordered my 'fabulous' new music from Amazon......
