My husband and I have finally decided that a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is the dog for us. We are moving into a house soon and am planning a puppy for the beginning of next year...uber excited

However, it is such a mission getting a puppy...I wondered if it was the same with other breeds? We are going about it the right way (to get a healthy puppy!) so have contact the SCWT association of GB which all reputable SCWT breeders are on. Only 300 puppies are breed a year so you have to go onto a puppy waiting list. However before they even consider you you have to meet with a SCWT area representative (who we are meeting next wk) to be asessed for suitability and answer a questionaire! If you are considered Then it can take up to 9months to be selected from the list! What a mission! I guess at least we'll know that we will end up with a healthy pup...something like this:

So cute!

It doesn't necessarily mean you will end up with a healthy puppy, that's in the lap of the Gods, it just means the puppy will end up with a healthy owner!

Good luck anyway, 10 out of 10 for endeavour!!

I know it's gorgeous! Yup will be at the yard with me most days. I am fearing it will end up like my car though...plastered in mud! That coat will be fun to groom every day!

You're right but I just meant it gives us a higher chance of a healthy puppy as there are apparently a lot of un-reputable Wheaten breeders out there. We wanted to make sure we didn't end up at the wrong breeder

Horrendous to groom is closer to the mark LOL. The SCWT coat matts in an instant! You will be spending many long hour grooming unless you go with the baldy look LOL.. I think in all my years grooming I have only had a handful that even being professionally groomed every 8 weeks kept a coat, leaving it any longer than that and it's a buzz cut. Around the age of 6-9mths they go through coat change, (baby out, adult in) you will be grooming all night with matchsticks in your eyelids LOL..

On a much brighter note, they are wonderful cheeky characters who will rule your life & your heart. Good luck with puppy. Look for a local groomer now LOL..

..... ahh but by going to a reputable breeder ( ie one who does all the health checks etc) she will certainly minimise her chances of getting one with problems - SO pleased that you are going about this the right way - so many folk spend more care and effort choosing their sofa than their puppy !

SCW are a lovely breed who deserve to be more popular - good luck with your new babe !

Thanks! They are not really little though, they get to around 47cm. I class my parent's Cairn terrier as little

Big thumbs-up for doing things the right way. Anything to put puppy millers and backyard breeders on the hoof, eh?

And yes, I am going to drive four hours to Massachusetts in November to look at a second Boston Terrier -- a retired show dog. He has the highest levels of health clearance (CERF, BAER, OFA) and comes from a long line of strong dogs.

There are only a handful of reputable breeders along the East Coast of the US and the alternatives -- the horrid pet stores; newspaper ads; buying online -- are so unfathomable to me. For me, you either go the rescue route or you go to a tip-top breeder -- there's simply no in-between.

Ooh I can top that

- last weekend I flew out to Marseilles in the South of France to buy a Groenendael ( BSD) puppy - I really wanted her bloodlines - her mum is an international show champion and dad is a Netherland/Belgium Champion and also the top working BSD in Holland ( working trials).

I've had to leave her in France for the next 6 months because of our rabies regulations ( coming in under the pet passport scheme which is better than quarantine for a pup)

Mad ....Moi ?????

P.S if anyone can tell me how to send pics I'll show you my new mademoiselle

Ah, but are you a breeder/handler or a "regular owner"?

Mine'll just be a pet, bless him. We had seen a couple of rescues but both were dog aggressive; the other breeders I'd been in contact with had pups good to go in a month, but there's no way I want to be housebreaking a short-haired pup in the depths of a NY winter. I've done it once and never again.

I'll be going up to see him in two weeks. His name's Sergei and I have every limb crossed that my Boston girl will like him

started out as a 'regular owner' about 20 odd years ago - now breed/show/judge and work my Belgian Shepherd Dogs and am totally passionate about my breed

although I do have kennels they are only used when my bitches are in season otherwise all the dogs are very much family pets and loved for themselves not for what they achieve in the showring etc.

I can sympathise about not wanting to housetrain throughout the winter - I never plan to have pups in the winter time it's just too much work and mess !!

Keeping everything crossed here for your new Boston boy ( LOVE his name !)
