MY BOY (A 7 YR OLD TB) HAD A POOR COAT AND WAS VERY ITCHY & SCURFY , FEEDMARK EQUIDERM PLUS AND OIL HAS MADE THE COAT LOOK A LOT BETTER HOWEVER I WOULD SAY THAT HE HAS A HOT SYSTEM AS HE IS USUALLY QUITE WARM AND ALWAYS SCRATCHING AND ASKING FOR A SCRATCH. IF HE GETS TOO WARM EVEN IN A VERY LIGHT RUG ON A COOLER NIGHT HE WILL BE DESPERATE TO GET THE RUG OFF AND ROLL LIKE MAD. I AM ERRING ON THE SIDE OF RATHER HE BE COOL THAN TOO HOT. I DID GIVE MY DOGS SULPHUR BLOCKS IN THEIR WATER IN THE SUMMER WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO COOL THEIR SYSTEM DOWN..BUT HAVE NOT SEEN ANYTHING SIMILAR FOR HORSES.
ANY IDEAS PLEASE?

My horse used to be quite hot/itchy and the vet suggested I could try epsom salts to cool his blood. I never did try it as he moved yards and settled down with a cool breeze and less midges etc.
Might be worth a try.
You could also ring the British Institute for Allergy and Environmental Therapy 01974 241376 or email info@allergy.org.uk who might be able to advise you of some drops to give him.
Good luck

Looked after a horse which sounds very similar to yours. We found the kindest thing to do for him was to clip him out all year round and leave him rugless as much as possible.

He was also a sweetitch sufferer which didnt help matters but was ok turned out in his Boett rug although it had to come off in the stable as he did get too warm in it.

Thanks
Note No Caps locks ! Sorry
I think Epsom salts may be worth a go .
As for clipping he never has been clipped and has a fine thoroughbred coat anyway so dont know if it will make much difference But thanks anyway.

I have a horse who is generally always hot! Ive never ever seen him chilly! Mine has sweet itch so his coat is always very scurfy as well. I started adding Soya Oil to his feed a month ago and its made a huge difference. Still quite scurfy but not as bad and generally he looks better. Otherwise, I always wash him down after he's sweated during work (water with whatever essential oils I want added to it). And also I try to wash him every fortnight with Head & Shoulders although he hates being bathed so this doesn't always happen.....!!

Mine's also in a Boett which I do make sure is washed whenever I wash him. He was clipped and I found it hasnt really helped with his coat as such but obviously keeps him a bit cooler. If you're not showing this year then why not clip?
