My dog has been scratching more than usual in the last few weeks.

He gets regular flea treatments and we've been checking him for fleas and no sign of them.

We've also been spraying him with fly spray before he goes for walk incase he's getting bitten by midges.

He had a bite inside his right ear which cleared with some sudocreme but he now also has a bit behind his left ear plus a strange white spot type lump on his chest which is very itchy and another now near his tail. He also has slightly scabby looking skin in his arm pit - all being treating with sudocreme.

He's been staying at my parents all week and apparently is getting worse - Iv'e phoned the vet for an appointment but they can't see him until wednesday.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be and what else we can do in the meantime? Bathing him is out of the question as he's a very sensitive wee soul and even getting the sudocreme on him is a drama.

He's 10 years old, we've had him since a pup and he's never had this problem before and nothing has changed in his routine/diet.

Thanks!

Please try and get him to the vet before that, that doesn't sound right at all, especially those growths.
Itchy dogs can be miserable - we know why we are itchy and hot and in pain and we know it makes it worse to scratch, they don't. All they feel is hot and in pain and then they hurt themselves more.

He may be allergic to the midge spray or fly treatment also - my dog is very sensitive and there is no way I would use commercial fly or midge spray on him, it's full of chemicals, I won't even use it on myself.
Scratching can also signal the externalisation of an internal problem.

My dog doesn't like baths either but he is prone to allergies and skin conditions so he has to suck it up. Rather than chasing him around with a bucket and drenching him I mix the shampoo and water in a small container and use a shower scrunchie (he has his own!!!!) to apply the lather to his coat/skin.

Use Malaseb from the vet for skin conditions, not shop-bought pet shampoos. Aloe vera gel might be better than sudocreme to ease itching and remove heat in the mean time.

Thanks - have managed to get him an appointment for Monday instead so hopefully he'll get it sorted soon as the itching is driving him mad poor thing! Doesn't help that his coat is changing too!

My dog came out all of a sudden in scabs which were really itchy. Took him the vets and he has a fungle infection :(
He is washed twice a week in malesab and its clearing up but hes still itchy (obviously its not cleared yet) Ill see if i can get any pictures of his scabs but they are nearly clared now so might not b able to get any decents ones for you to compare to your dog

Not a very clear picture camera on phone isnt very good but his heir falls out and were left with scabby paths like this

Can be a symptom of food intolerances, although i'm sure unlikely as your dog probably hasn't had a diet change but worth a thought, they can like humans develop intolerances later in life.

I have a very allergic dog who has to have Burn fish and maize food as she reacts to rice and lots of proteins. When she does have a flare up I use cut & graze by chestfields which really soothes the skin, their pet shampoo is great also as hypoallergenic and completely natural.
