My farm manager let me down suddenly, as after assuring me he would have enough hay for me for winter he announced last week that he would now need it for his sheep!! So have had to source more hay for 4 horses-unfortunately could not be choosy as major shortage in my area!! I have had to buy some rye grass based hay.its not dusty, has nice smell to it and horses eat it all up-have been feeding it for approx 10 days, unfortunately due to circumstances was not able to blend in with old hay. Now i notice that 3 of the 4 horses have very dirty bottoms and tails-they are cob crosses and all seem happy in themselves. So does it sound like it may be hay as have changed nothing else in their diets and should i hope their guts will get used to it or should i be doing more ie vet??

does sound like change in hay. My mare is the same although I changed haylage to one which is richer. I put her on some NAF preobotics (sp?)and that seemed to help her over the worst of it. She is still a bit loose but nowhere near the very dirty bottom and tail stage!

Yes it will be the hay i would have thought. Jusy keep an eye on their hydration (tent the skin on the neck), and clean their botties. All the vet can do is give them some vitamins and fluids but it does not sound this bad.

I have noticed some of mine have had loose droppings for a few days; I have not changed hay, so have put it down to the grass being very wet and them staying out a bit longer at night?
