I am so proud of our lab

i took her shooting yesterday and she was SO well behaved... apart from the first drive.
first drive:
we had to stand at the end of the wood behind the guns, and my dog was whining and howling and yapping and OMG it was so embarassing- apparently you couldn't actually hear it, but still! she was so excited, not at the gun shots, just at the birds falling out of the sky LOL.
next drive i let her off right at the end, and wow... its like she knows what to do without even being told.. nose on the ground, covering backwards and forwards, she doesn't go too far, she runs in sort of circles, touching back with me every round...
i let her off at the end of each drive, and then she was off for the whole of the last drive.. i was v. impressed with the puppy dog

she really loves her work... the head gamekeeper commented on what a nice dog she was and that she was naturally good at it, and with some work she will be a very nice dog

yay.
i was also asked 3 times by various beaters whether we were having pups from her... no :'( she has an inherited skin problem...

everyone always asks me if we are.. shame that we aren't...
anyway, im taking her out again on monday (same place).. its nice there as the gamekeeper is very patient with the dogs and understands that she will not be amazingly behaved on her first few times... but i think he impressed her
laugh.gif

the other thing was i had to pick her up to get her in the blumming truck... haha, it was so annoying, she wouldn't jump into the trailer, i think because of all the other dogs (shes a wuss!) and then she sat on the bales in the corner behind me, bless her
laugh.gif

she was also allowed to "pick up" a phesant. the gamekeepers dog brought it back to him and he chucked it for her, and she picked it up and brought it back, althuogh with difficulty... was v. pleased with her
laugh.gif
she was so gentle with it and dropped it right in my feet and then sat down.. good pup!

pointless post, but very proud

Wow, sounds like you had a great day, what a good girl!
I bet you are delighted, but - wot, no piccies?!

And well done for doing the right thing as regards breeding her, my boy has a skin condition and I would not wish it on my worst enemy.

i know.. im sorry! someone was taking photos of us (friends mum) and pup. was included, so will track them down!
and yup, we are getting her neutered, but she also doesn't have normal seasons...she had one last year, so would be difficult anyway, but the skin condition is so horrible, she licks her tummy and legs and gnaws on her paws, horrible to watch, trying to sort it out, but nothing seems to be working at the moment... what does your dog have?

Good girl!

I bet you're proud of her, and what a nice gamekeeper - that's what I need to find too!

Poor girl with her poorly skin - I hope you find something to soothe it for her soon

But echo the good call for not breeding, even though it is a shame cos otherwise she sounds cracking.

good gamekeeper is always helpful
smile.gif

and yup, we hope so too.. its horrible to watch as we can't really do anything other than put E45 etc on her tummy, but nothing seems to have helped so far...
but we are getting another pup. as we can't breed from her.. border terrier, or a rescue lab... cannot wait

He has atopia caused by an allergy to tree pollen and quite severe food allergies, He is very bad at the moment (same as yours, has removed all the hair from his throat, stomach, inner arms, biting his paws and legs) and I have just switched him onto a raw diet, at this stage I am prepared to try anything and I don't want to pump him full of steroids.
Malaseb shampoo also helps sooth it, you can get it from the vets.
He is a great dog and I hate seeing him like this.

thanks for the suggestions guys, will def. try aloe vera, hadn't thought of that!

CC, its horrible isn't it.. always nibbling, licking, itching and just eating her paws! licks herself raw... so horrible.. the vets haven't really diagnosed her, other than she has skin allergies, we are getting tests done to see what she is allergic to... will get mum to ask about Malaseb shampoo, sounds like it might help... and tbh. anything that "may" help is a bonus...
ours is on speacial dog food (dry biscuits) for skin allergies, expensive but does seem to help, we took her off it for a while to see if it was helping, and she got so much worse... so keeping her on that..

I used to slather aloe vera onto my share horse, he had sweet itch and his owners left him in a Boett 24/7 - it only came off when I was there so you can imagine how prickly it was for him

He seemed to like it.

just off to put some on her tummy

will report back if any progress, mum is going to get hold of aloe vera juice- where do you buy that from? never heard of it!
