anyone have an idea what this could be - our yearling has one white sock. last week it was a little swollen and then suddenly the heel area is red and sore, and a bit oozy. have hibiscrubbed and put on heel to hoof but not clearing although not swollen now. it looks like mud fever/scratches - maybe the skin was grazed and the organism entered. Any one got other ideas or other treatments?

Sounds like it could have become sunburnt then sore and allowed the mudfever to take hold. Or it could be harvest mite. Hibiscrub would be the way forward with mudfever, but won't clear up harvestmite. Heven't had a horse with harvestmite for years so would not know the best treatment for that, ask your vet for advice on that one!!

Sounds like sunburn esp if it's just on the white leg. you can get wraps but being a yearling he might well just pull them off

I'd clean it up then put on some sudocream til it heals up, once the skin is in tact you could use sun block. He might have to come in when it's sunny until you can get sun block on!
