Me and Biscuit were on the fields near our house where the exit is a little bar/stile thing that leads straight on to a main road.

Biscuit was having a root in the bushes and found a 'Kong wubba' that he was playing with, we played fetch with it for a bit then biscuit lay down and full pelt ran across the fields heading across the fields, he wasn't listening to recall, I dropped the whistle which we taught emergency recall to in the long grass and couldn't find it.

I desperation I ran after him, he stopped before the stile which he can jump from a standstill and I honestly thought he was going to jump it and run into the main road.

I managed to find a water bottle which I grabbed and threw in the oppisite direction and luckily he chased it. Managed to catch him and put him on his longline and he was recalling perfectly

Just wanted to share this really because as you can imagine I am pretty shaken up

I had something very similar last night, was playing ball and pup decided he wanted to go and join the kids playing ball on the sports pitch across the main road - I had to run backwards (if I chase him, he runs the other way :o), blowing a whistle, screech and swing a ball in the air - he had a good think while sitting on the bank, wondering whether or not to come back, which he did, thank goodness, the littler sod! Terrifying, isn't it? I use a Whizzclick clicker/whistle, it has a cord so it is always on your wrist, or use a lanyard?

I shall be putting it on a lanyard :) Biscuit is too fast, it was scary because he went from being totally focused on me to what I would call 'flight mode'

Yikes, know that terrierfied (sic) feeling all too well! Not nice, is it. It hasnt' happened with my lot in years, but not one that I'd like to repeat any time soon.

My older staffie bitch will do that and has given me a couple of really nasty scares not least because she is not good with small and fluffy, neither can I be sure that I would get her back as obviously Staffies are not popular.

She is on an extender lead in the open fields now with the exception of 2 where they are a: fully fenced b: I can see anyone coming. I do however, have the massive advantage in that she can go off lead at the yard as our fields have deer fencing so we can walk in there and it doesn't matter if she decides to b**ger off. Its very rare as she is normally so focused but just can't risk it.
