Very scary morning - info on prostate problems needed please.

Hi,

can anyone give me information on prostate problems please as I know nothing about this & have had a visit to a very unhelpful vet this morning.

My 6 year old male rottie lost a lot of blood from his penis this morning, and I mean a lot. He managed to spray the walls on our upstairs landing up to about waist height and soaked an area of carpet about 18 inches square. My husband found him stood up unable to move with this happening, and managed to turn him over and stem the blood loss using ice.

We took him to the emergency vet who is not our usual vet, and she felt it was a prostate problem & has given him anti-biotocs, an anti-inflammatory & an anti-testosterone injection. She was not very forthcoming with information & has just referred us back to our vet in due course.

I have been looking on the net & worried myself as is easily done, but i wondered if anyone out there can explain to me in laymans terms what could be going on.

The vet could not feel an enlarged prostate but said it's what she thinks the problem is. He is urinating well with no blood, no pain and it is coming out at full flow. He has however been constipated for a few days which is apparently a sympton, but other than that has shown nothing unusual at all.

I understand he will have to be castrated to reduce the amount of testosterone produced but assuming it isn't cancer, which from what I've read it doesn't appear to be (please god don't let it be) will this alleviate the problem?

Any info greatly received.

Yep as u suggest hormones and their supply to the prostate cause these conditions, testosterone being one, castrating shrinks the prostate right down and takes away the supply of hormone it's a condition Seen in un neutered males and very very very rare to see in neutered ones (I dont have alot of time to explain have to flit) but yes can occur as infections/enlargement/abcess/cysts, build up of bacteria which can then cause infection often re occuring and shows painful bloody urination and or difficulty passing faeces also and can effect the hind legs, or can spread in the form of cancer without knowing to other body parts where it often becomes un treatable, I took a boarding dog to vets as it had an enlarged prostate and vet said they are a night mare if if it spreads (becomes mostly un treatable) and she highly recommends castration where ever prostrate problems occur or pref before they occur this even above testicualr cancer is why my dogs are all done, its a very painful condition for a dog to have to go through.
She said the prostrate is such a hard area to work (as in surgery/removal) and a big op for the dog it's self.
We see alot through work hence the basic info above.
Im glad he seems more comfortable, have a chat to your own vet asap.
How old is he?
 
Thanks Cayla & CaveCanem - he is 6 years old & apart from what happened this morning he has no symptons at all and is showing no pain or discomfort & no problems having a wee.

The vet has given a pot for a urine sample which we will take to our normal vet once they are open again in a few days and he will definately be booked in to be castrated. We have just had the rescue one done so should have had them both done together - perhaps we would have got a discount!!

Hopefully the urine sample will show whether there is a UTI and we will then have to see what else the vet picks up - I am very worried in case it is cancer but having got no info at all from the vet this morning I will have to wait and see what our vet says. Poor boy was very frightened this morning but hopefully it will be something treatable and we will get him castrated before anything more drastic happens.

I've always said I want my boy to be like Peter Pan and never age, but the vet called him an old dog this morning & it really hit home :-/
 
I had no idea my GSD had an aggressive UTI until he pee'd blood on the snow. It could have been going on for months, dogs are incredibly stoic.
I was convinced he had cancer but like I say, was just this UTI and because it had been going on so long, it took a real blasting with anti-biotics to clear up (and he also had an enlarged prostate) got him castrated so that was two less things to get infected.
His nether region conformation is not great (very wide bladder neck, short urethra, half of his sheath was removed as a pup :o) because of a traumatic whelp, we believe, so he is very susceptible to infections through, say, dirty water or something.

A family dog had the prostate problems Cayla describes - he started with constipation which got progressively more severe, chronic infections of the anal glands and towards the end tremors in the hind legs. The cancer spread to the testes and lower bowel and proved inoperable so he was put to sleep. I think he was about eight when the first symptoms started.

Fingers crossed that it is a UTI, especially if he has no other symptoms, poor Spike was in discomfort for a long time with varied symptoms before anything was done. :(

Definitely neutering ASAP.
