Hi all, this is my first post and I have come here for some advice.

I have a 15.1 Coloured Traditional Cob. He has a really scurfy tail. Pretty much the whole dock bone, but worst at the top. He is itchy too. The rest of his coat and mane are fine. He feathers are great too.

He is fed adlib hay and a handful of Hifi lite for breakfast. (only because the others do). He lives out in the day and in at night.

Any ideas how I can get rid of the unsightly scurf. It also seems to make the tail hairs break off, or perhaps him itching it does this.

Please help!

i should imagine the hairs breaking off is the scratching.
Have you tried any shampoos??
is it all year around? - Worse in summer??

My girl came to me with this - A good couple of washes with TriScrub/HibiScrub either end of a week - (sun and friday i think) - and a fly rug (mostly to stop the scratching!) = Good as new!
Also google Sulfur as a homeopathic remedy.

:)

A photo might be handy

This is a new horse so dont know the history of the scurfy tail. I will try shampooing and see how it goes. I wondered about Tea tree shampoo.

There is no broken skin or anything just thick scurf!

I will google sulfur or is it sulphur

i use supreme products moisturise and condition for that kind of thing. only had to use it once on my youngster. its the green liquid spray. u spray it on and if it rub it in it foams up. no need to rinse it out. i've used it for general itchiness and on sweet itch (along with benzyl benzoate) and its been really good
