my KWPN has always been very sensitive about her ears being touched since she was born
(i think origionating from Mum rejecting her and the first warning of a kick was the feel of mums belly moving against her ear?)
anyway she is fine if you touch them firmly and stoke them, but if they are accidentally touched she will shy away.
shes fine to bridle up etc, its just when they get touched or brushed against lightly OR if i try to trim her ear fluff. ive tried scissors and trimmers and she pulls away the same.
shes fine will clippers everywhere else.
ive tried feed to help to keep her focused on other things but shes not a foodie type mare (plus bringing her head up from being on the ground level isnt good!)
my other 2 neds are fab and clip inside their ears no problems!
what else can i do to try to desensitize her?
shes a lovely looking horse but her ear fluff makes her look younger than her years!

Mine is the same, very very sensitive around her ears, and particularly inside them. Totally fine for putting on/taking off her bridle and careful grooming, but certainly not anything else! There is no need for me to trim her ears, and with her being so sensitive anyway I would rather she has the protection of her fluff from the weather, so she is left as she is. Tbh I would just leave her!

When I first got her I very lightly trimmed off the big sprout of hair that was sticking out of her ear. Well, I certainly regretted that as for every time I rode her afterwards for the next couple of months she head shook terribly as the smallest bit of wind, or a bug upset her so much.

Unless it is life or death that her ears are trimmed I would strongly advise to leave well alone lest you have as many dreadful rides with an upset mare as I landed myself with!
