Here's the thing my horses are sound bare on the following: concrete, roads, packed down uneven stones, rock hard uneven ground, even a group of stones in a driveway type thing. However we have these brutal small sharp stones which are scattered all over the place and when they hit them striding out they obviously have a reaction.

So definition of rock crunching please. I think my horses are doing really well at the moment and even with grass at night. This stones were always in issue even with shoes. Just want to know if things are ok more or less. I spend time brushing back those tiny devil stones and then fine, but as the nature of these things they find they're way back. Personally I think it's reasonable they act like this but am unsure. I mean anything would feel these. Pulses are good ect so just am curious.

When a horse perceives it has stood on something sharp and picks it foot off it quickly to put it down somewhere esle I don't worry about it but if it did it and went limp limp for a couple of strides it would .
Is that what you mean ?

Nope they don't go lame. Just a quick off and wince type of thing. But to some people they seem to think this is a reason for shoes! I do have one princess that while continuing on and not going lame will anticipate stepping on a stone. But she anticipates everything. Like in riding she anticipates aids ect. So I do give have to ask her to walk on after she hits one. Again not lame.

Sorry, I still worry!

F's pretty good on most surfaces including rocky tracks up the hills.

However, some of our local roads were resurfaced and then it rained so we ended up with lots of 'floating' very small sharp stones on top of the road. which if he hit wrong he would feel.

The only track he reacts on (by way of mostly walking a bit slower!) is a forestry/logging track so mostly compacted stone base with a few floating smallish sharp stone on top and it's those that cause an issue because they are on a solid surface. They'd hurt me in walking boots so ;) I don't worry about it but I suspect others would find them easier than he does as his feet are still flatter than perfect etc.

My little lady is sound on concrete and is becoming much sounder/is happy now to walk over stones free will but those sharp stones proper make her ouch! She chooses to walk over big stones instead of grassy areas so obviously isn't too bad on her feet. She's only been barefoot for a month and has rotated pedal bones/laminitic!

I'd be tempted to look a bit more at hoof, just to decide whether it was an ouch because we'd all ouch or if there was a bit of compromise there.

Is the sole thick and concave, is there any stretch to white line, event lines or thrush etc?

Lucy, event lines are mostly gone now. Yes did have them. Will check for stretch today. I'm quite pleased with their progress really. These stones are a pain. Once I keep the paths swept a bit everyone is happy. If I stepped on one of these bare I'd drop to the ground and cry like a baby. LOL!

I feel your pain. Not all horses are able to achieve sufficient solar thickness and lack of inflammatory response to be able to deal with them. That is the same old same old.

I do find those that are able to grow a good enough sole do manage them. But getting all the boxes (diet and exercise etc) ticked can be really challenging in some circumstances.

Are the hooves much tighter at the top?

Yes, much tighter which I'm happy about. A couple of these were in shoes since 2 because I was stupid so I compromised the foot already. Such a difference in the 3yo who has never had shoes and mills over everything. Not riding her yet but she never winces. So you kick yourself for ruining what could have been good feet. I can also only manage the roads on Sunday early. So that doesn't help but they are being worked quite good now. When I sweep away those sharp stones I do my warmup on it and make a loop through the concrete ground in the barn so at least they get some hard to work on.

I've not seen your feet but I suspect you will get there.
