Very specific question - psyllium husks and ulcer prevention

Just wondering whether anyone has used psyllium husks for ulcer prevention, and your experiences. Wary about posting, as I don't want any other suggestions at this point - I have plenty - but just looking for specific experiences if you have them Thank you.

I do use a course of psyllium husks regularly for the prevention of sand colic, but I have never heard of them being used for ulcer prevention.

That said, when water is added they do soon form a gloopy messy viscous liquid which, as a lay person, you could imagine would line the stomach wall quite effectively .

I do a couple of 5 day courses over the summer for sand purposes but can't say I've noticed a difference in my ulcery one (constant diet in summer which stresses her = ulcers)

Yes, I had heard of its use for sand colic prevention, but a (sensible and experienced) friend was telling me that another (sensible and experienced) friend's horse hasn't had any ulcer issues since she has been on them. A bit of googling also seems to back that up. That's why I thought I would ask on here, to see if anyone else has used them.

I do 5-day courses when it's very muddy (am in the middle of one now) and when it's very dry for sand colic avoidance too but have never heard of using it for ulcers.

Might try it - the fat Appy is dieting as she's managed to put on weight over winter. She has childhood food issues so finds anything other than ad lib ulcer inducing. Cheap enough!

In case it's useful - don't pay the equestrian tax on psyllium husk. NAF is £20-25/kilo for example.
The human grade psyllium husk, for example from Buywholefoodsonline, is around £14/kilo.

The problem with the human psyllium is that it's gross & goes to gloop as soon as it goes in their mouth. Some ponies (DAVE!) find it absolutely abhorrent, so he has to have pellets.

I get Hestevard Colon Aid. It's pricey, but lasts ages. I feed the first 7 days of every month.
There's also NAF Sand Gard.

I feed a course of 5 days every couple of months as we are on very sandy soil. It's not made any difference to my ulcery horse and i would be careful of feeding it daily as it can bind to nutrients and cause issues with dehydration/constipation.
