Ouch, ouch, ouch!
last night, riding a relative well behaved, sound young horse, in the field where ive taken her before and all of a sudden *bang* bucking like crazy and finally off i came. So bizzare, im getting the vet out to check her back. But it was competely out of the blue, shes not nappy or annything. Cant think for the life of me want may have tiggered this outragous bucking bronco act -

Typing with one arm now, off to get an x-ray just incase. So strange! If her back comes up sound, i really will be at a loss to understand this. This is my own horse, not even one im training, and ive had her for ages - even when i re-backed her she never did anything like that.

ideas?

Perhaps she was bitten or stung by some insect. That seems the most likely thing to me.

Hi

A young horse I had been bringing on did something very dimilar, he had laways been a complete donkey with me and nver did anything naughty, the thought of him bucking was laughable, but I was taking him into the field to do some XC once and he just lost it and started bronking all over the place - I came flying off! He had always cantered in fields etc before and not found it particuarly exciting. Richard Maxwell was coming to our yard so I had him check him out and he said there was a problem with his pole which ad caused it, he put it right but the horse still from that point on seemed to have learnt from this and was always trying it on after that. Not totally sure to be honest what the cause was - could just have been realising he was a big lad who had the ability to remove me if he really wanted to!

Probably doesn't help much but at least you know you're not the only one!

Hope your arm is OK

Yes that may be it. My friends horse had a similar thing. Lovely well behaved horse suddenly reared violently and took off, leaving her in a heap on the floor. This happened out hacking a few weeks ago and the flies were quite bad, can only assume thats what it was.

well i remember her bucking bronco, and i was saying whoa ETC, and thinking she was giving up, then i remember thinking one more and im off - which i was... however the next think i remember was being back on her, asking my friend "had i just fallen off?" apparently she did another few bucks when i got back on but i dont reember.

we where in long grass, so as pen thought, something could have bitten her - i didnt think of that!

she's a big sports horse so i didnt stand a chance really! hey-hum. very strange behaviour for the ever so kind, gentle horse.

There are some flies that normally are restricted to the New Forest that I have noticed in the last week right over the other side of the county (40 miles away). Although not biters, they have the effect of making horses go crazy. Due to the dodgy weather conditions this year, they could be cropping up in many different part of the country.

I hope that your arm is okay!!

Shes been in that field before though a couple if times and she loved it - she love any type of hacking. and she seemed to this time, ears forward etc - then she just exploded! maybe something stung her, but i would not have thought she'd react so badly!

hope she's ok this morning. i hate all that bucking bronco stuff - worry if shes hurt herself.

My mare did the exact same thing yesterday. She's always been prone to the odd small buck, but I was walking her in a field and she just took off, started broncing, leaping around, then slid to a halt, reared vertical, pawed the air, shot forward and started broncing again. She was like this for a good half an hour, not stopping at all!

i went to a&e, after 3 hours & x-rays, ive broken the ligament in my shoulder, where it holds your arm on. that will explain why it knackers to try and move...
!
wonder if it is these 'bugs' with the weather making them flip out? dont get me wrong, she not bomb proof, but this id never expect from her. we where riding out later than usually, perhaps it was the light - as some horse do go a bit funny when light the fades - think it plays tricks on them. (it was only about 8.30, so by no means going dark..)

no mucking out for me for at least 2 weeks, in a bit of a muddle now!

Well, ladies, I've said it before and I daresay I'll say it again. The cure for a horse who has learned that he can unseat you by bucking and "tries it on" thereafter, is a side-saddle. He can buck 'til Christmas but he won't shift a side saddle lady (or man for that matter). The horse learns very quickly that it is very boring bucking when his rider just sits there as if she's in her granny's rocking chair and it's humane too!
